Grading service guarantees

Do all the main grading services guarantee the coins they slab to be authentic,I've visited the sites they have and they tell a lot about the grading guarantee but very little if any about the authenticity part of it ,With the exception of a couple of them.image

  • Main ones like PCGS, NGC, ICG etc yes, but others do not.

I know PCGS and NGC do, and I'm pretty sure ICG and ANACS do. With the rest, any guarantee is worthless.

"With the rest, any guarantee is worthless."

For anyone to verify authenticity, the coin must be removed from its holder, whatever kind of holder that may be.

If I sell a raw coin on famous ebay and the buyer thinks it's a fake, the only "guarantee" I can reasonably offer is that money will be refunded provided that coin is returned to me within the return privilege time frame in its original, unopened and untampered-with holder as I sent it out.

Determination of authenticity or fakeness is merely an opinion. The "guarantee" comes down to,"Who do you trust? You can trust us (or me)."

  • As a rule the major services do stand behind the coins they grade and will pay for the coins if they turn out to be non-genuine. A you have seen checking the web sites they do not actually have any written guarantee of authenticity though. Interestingly the only servces where I have seen written guarantees of authenticity have been on a couple of the third tier services.

I've been pointing out for years that the major services do not actually guarantee authenticity other than in practice. Of course that is the place where it really matters
