Well, as it says, I'm new to the forums, I primarily signed up because I've been reading the forums for some time, and I had some questions. I'm also somewhat of a new collector, I've always collected coins, just not nearly as in-depth as Iam now. (I'm only seventeen.) The first question I have is: Can someone explain to me what exactly designates a Franklin half dollar as FBL, I haven't seen any good photographs of them to tell for myself, only the slabbed coins with the grade stamped on. Also, where can I get some information on 'VAMS' I see people posting about them all of the time and haven't seen many in real life.

I have similar questions to you. This book ("The Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars") will answer most of them (I think). Other than that, there are some experts on this board that should be able to help.

Try the "search" function, it works very well. In the yellow area on the lefthand side of the page, type in frankies, or franklin or fbl and you will have enough info to keep you busy for hours!!

An easy way to get a lot of pictures of Full Bell Lines across the Liberty Bell on the reverse of a Franklin is to join Heritagecoins.com (for free). Or just look at a Hertage current auction under Frankie Halves, and hit the "Look Closer" option button over the pictured coin. Pick another one that's not FBL's on the bell and do the same thing. You'll quickly learn to see the difference. Welcome and have fun!!

Welcome fellow NOOB!! I hope you enjoy your stay here! As far as FBL frankies goes, I don't own too many franks so I better let the pros get this one. The only thing I know is that FBL is Full bell lines. I believe the line on the back of the bell should be full and go most of the way down just like the liberty bell!!! I think the franklin pictures is not the best example of FBL! However, take my advice with a grain of salt. I mostly collect modern coins and mint sets. Franks are a little bit before my area of knowledge.
