VAM'ing question

PrethenPrethen Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭
I have about 180 Morgan and Peace dollars (all are common and mostly circulated, that is there are no CC's or '95's or the like in the lot) and I plan on going though all of them relatively soon to see if I can identify any VAM's. My question is this: Realistically, what are my chances of finding a Top 100 VAM in the entire lot? I realize this is going to be a WAG. I guess I'm curious after I gone through some of the preliminary chapters of the VAM book and start looking, what's the chance that I'll spend hours and hours and come up with nil? By the way, even if I come up with nothing worthwhile, I think the hunt might be sort of fun and informative, so I'll do it regardless.

Normally about 1-3 out of 300...so you should at least pull 1 nice one. Alot of others, but they may not be as "in demand". Still, you will find some interesting ones!

I have heard of some folks searching 500 coins and fining nothing. I have heard of folks searching 500 coins and finding 7 to 12 Top 100s. I have been lucky enough to pull 11 or 12 out of a 500 coin lot from the shop. However, I have heard of more "somethings" than "nothings".

But, remember, it is always educational and just because it is not a Top 100 or Hot 50 does not mean it is not worth anything. There are several VAMs not in the Top 100 or Hot 50 Morgan books that do bring big premiums. You just need to find them. image

With all that said, good luck on your search and please let us know your findings. image

Your odds are good. Pay particular attention to anything dated 1880... lots of VAMs to be had with all of the mints that year. The real bandwagon of course is 1878-P, but trying to sort out what's what in that date still gives me a headache.

May the force be with you!!!
    When in doubt, don't.

The thrill is in the hunt and discovery. Good Luck! And bring back any special 1921-D coins you find.

Jeff is correct, though...some vams bring nice money that are not in the Top 100 or Hot 50 list. Rare 8TF's, 1921-S Thorn Heads, and
    certain 21-D coins among others.
