New Purchase : 1797 13 stars half dime

Here is another new purchase from a "nearly complete" set of half dimes I picked up recently. 1797 13 stars (R6 variety). Do you think the scattered small marks would result in a bodybag if this coin were submitted to PCGS? It's not bent/straightened or holed or scratched.

  • Yes, I think it would be bagged but it is worth the try since it is such an early US coin.

that coin DOES NOT need a slab.

I actually agree with dorkkarl. Slabbing it would take away from it. There are two other 1797's that go along with it, and one of them would not be able to holder at PCGS, so I'll be keeping all 3 raw. Sometimes when I buy a collection (like the one this half dime came from) I send the more expensive coins to PCGS for grading to establish a fair price with the previous owner.

Most coins, especially early coins, do not need to be encapsulated.

Collectors suffer from not being able to fully examine it.

One of the major services would be delighted to encapsulate it.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
