I don't know anything about toning, so could I get some help with this?

I don't know if this would be considered toning or what. The coin has a gold color to in on both sides. Just need some thoughts on that and also the "S" in "cents" is almost non-existent, how did that happen? Thanks!

Tough to tell from that pic (that's a large picture), but it looks like it might have a soft gold coin but it's too dark to tell. You won't get much, if any of premium for that kind of tone in a Jefferson.
  • Yes, the Jefferson nickles will often tone anywhere from light to deep gold.

The filled S in CENTS if probably from grease in the die, not allowing the metal of
the coin to flow into that area.

    Nice coin!

54-S Jefferson's are almost always poorly struck. The missing S is likely a filled die.

As for the gold color, it is indeed toning. Not unusualy for Jefferson's and very typical for Buffalo nickels.
