Are the spots and stains on the PCGS MS66 Barber Quarter from a poor dipping job?

Here it is:

MS66 25C

From the scan, it looks unattractive. I'm wondering if it might have turned in the holder. What do you think?

  • Doesn't look like dip residue to me. I though dip residue was a
    brownish staining.

Plus, the coin doesn't look dipped.

Still rather a poor 66, IMO.

Edited: althoug, the rectangular stain on the rev. does look suspicious.

  • Doesn't that look more like someone sneezed on it? (dipping residue I mean).

It does appear very ugly for the 66 grade. Check out the gouges on the neck and lower lip. Poor girl.

This coin was sold at the most recent signature sale. IMO, it's most likely an MS 65 coin that got bumped for attractive luster. I think there are far too many contact marks on this coin for it to be in a 6 holder.

The spots are not from dipping, but it's mighty ugly for a 66.

typical carbon spots, not from dipping, but that coin's an embarrassment for a ms-66 grade.

  • That coin should be sent in for an in holder review. The carbon/?grease spots should limit it to MS-64.

  • I appreciate the comments, guys. I guess a high-end 66 would sell for much more than what they're asking. I just don't find it very appealing going by the pictures.
