Death of the eBay stores?

I sold a $425 coin in my eBay store and paid $12.31 in fees. Next month it would be $22.00 (plus an extra $6 month base fee increase)

Does anybody (besides me) have an eBay store they plan on closing before the new price increases?

On a $10,000 coin the fee will go from $163.13 to $320.75.

    We're closing ours.

Overall, we find eBay sales to be a poor return on time invested and their fees don't make it anymore enticing.

I had plans to open one, but not now.

My short experience with eBay selling was not that great. It takes a lot of effort to take the pictures, compose the write-ups and upload the posting. Then after the sale you have the letters and email messages back and forth plus the packaging and the trip to the post office. THEN if they decide they don’t like the item, it’s discussions back and forth, and fights to get your money back from ebay.

Selling coins at coin shows is a lot easier, and given eBay’s every escalating fees it’s often not that much more expensive. You pay a flat amount, and after that it’s up to you to buy and sell as much as possible. Buy it at the show … sell it at the show if you are lucky … fill want lists … and see it all BEFORE you buy. It’s old-fashioned, but it really works for me.

Coins are not a high mark-up item for the most part. We dealers do handle a lot of money, but most us are lucky if our gross margins are 10 to 20 percent. eBay fees don't take that into consideration.

I've been selling on eBay for five years and had considered opening a store. Not now. The fees will not make it worthwhile.

    I hope eBay takes notice.

The store went "Poof" about 20 minutes after the announcment was read last week or when ever it was. Heck as far as I am concerned right now Ebay can go "Poof" also for selling.

Thanks for the info. I was just about to spend a lot of time putting one of these stores together.

    Now I'll pass.

  • I was really suprised when I heard the news and did a double take when they mention how high the increases would be....I guess most investors think its a pretty crappy idea too. The stock has tanked since the announcement..

I used to sell a lot on ebay and saw the writing on the wall. Started a mail order company last November and it's been great. You get repeat business which rarely happens on ebay. You can also sell multiples of the same thing without killing the market. I'll will still sell stuff on ebay but my ebay store is going POOF!!!

I am a collector, and I while I occasionally will sell a duplicate coin or something else (DVD, CD, etc) on ebay, I never understood the advantage of the ebay store. Perhaps someone with experience can enlighten me.
  • Will probally sell of a bunch of stuff sometime before the fee hike... then, it'll be pretty much just BST and Coin Show sales after that...

The listing fee is 2 cents for 30 days (plus 1 cent for gallery). Up until now, the final fees were the same.

Listing a coin for 7 days on eBay opening at $500 would cost $5.05 vs. $0.03 in a store listing for 30 days.

The benefits are a lower listing fee for a longer period, but the store listings don't show up in the main eBay searches (there is a seperate serach for items listed in stores) so there is not much traffic looking at the auctions. Monthly fees start at $9.99

So eBay stores are a good place to list higher dollar items that you aren't in a hurry to sell.

While I do not have a store, I have listed as many as 20-25 items at a time, some worth thousands of dollars. This has ceased. I now offer PQ pieces Raw, pieces that may grade as high as 66 but #1- Do not merit the cost of plastic and even if they did, #2- By the time all the bargain hunters got done I wouldn't make a profit. It's just not worth it.

I must say that I have been doing well with this approach, actually realizing more pure profit and then I look around at other sellers offering what they claim to be exactly what I have not even garnering so much as a bid yet mine sell for 5 times what they offered theirs for. Much is sold to repeat customers that have already experienced the quality of what WAS to be sent to PCGS but sold this way instead.

I just can't see selling expensive items on eBay anymore. It's much simpler to send such merchandise to Heritage or Teletrade. Of course, this is just MHO!image

Usually I would put a couple of auctions on the straight Ebay Auction format to draw people into the store. Most people are usually looking for more than one coin or car part. The auctions drew them in to pay the price I really wanted for a item. Also if the people saw that many items were available they would ask if you had something else that was not listed. Probably 40% of my car part selling was outside of ebay because of questions that were asked. It was fun while it lasted but no more.

Was the fee increase just for stores or does it apply to auctions too??

I guess SOME eBay Store sellers will now be charging $10 to ship single uninsured coins. Wear on tires, gasoline, packaging, time invested,
and now eBay Store Fees! image

Sure gonna pave the way for the ones who KEEP the stores.

Less competition and higher prices (a bit) for their coins.

It's like taking your ad OUT of the yellow pages. Think HARD before doing so.

  • Even though I was mostly a buyer, I did sell about 5 bullion/coin related items and It is a lot of work on part of the seller and little reward. I asked Ebay and PayPal to shove it and closed my accounts with both.

I (& most of your competition) LOVE to hear how so & so will close their eBay store or so & so will now not open one. All you have to do to negate the fee hike is raise the prices of YOUR STORE ITEMS enough to offset the fee hike. I mean, GEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZ, the listings there only cost as low as TWO CENTS PER 30 DAYS (THREE CENTS WITH A GALLERY IMAGE)!!!!!!! Let's see, that's a whopping .067 CENTS PER DAY WITHOUT A GALLERY IMAGE & .1 CENTS PER DAY WITH A GALLERY IMAGE!!!!!! image

Where in the WORLD can you get the exposure eBay gives you for the same price - REALLY, PLEASE TELL ME 'CAUSE I WANT TO SIGN UP THERE.

Of course, as the laws of supply & demand go, if your store listings are about 2-3% higher on average (to offset the fees) you'll sell a little less (all else equal) but, really, how much less? Just increase the # of listings a tad to offset the gross profit lost for an apples to apples number of listings.

But, hey, what do I know. PLEASE close your eBay store or DON'T open one - THE FEES ARE TOO HIGH imageimageimage

BTW, in case anyone is NOT familiar with the price hikes, the MAXIMUM amount per listing NON-eBayStore items are going to increase is 50 cents per listing. An extra 20 cents per listing if you choose the 10 day auction option, up to a MAXIMUM of 20 cents additional for certain buy-it-now amounts, and an extra 10 cents for NON-STORE ITEM gallery images - BUT, for the extra 40% gallery image charge, eBay is going to increase the size of the gallery image by 56% (so actually as a cost per "square foot" - or pixel - the cost is GOING DOWN)!

Edited to fix a minor math error image

The sad thing about eBay stores is that for the longest time they SUCKED MAJORLY for the simple reason that they didn't show up in searches. This made store items all but invisible, as one would have to drive traffic to their store -- and if you were going to do this, you might as well just set up a website.

Then about six months ago or so, eBay search started working for stores. Right away I picked up a few choice items that had been languishing for who knows how long. As I expanded my searches, I found more stuff. Stores, which had once SUCKED, now totally ROCKED.

Perhaps it was too much of a good thing. Now with the price going up and so many stores closing, stores will go back to the obscurity where they once dwelt. Ultimately, each proprietor has to decide for themself whether the price increase is worth it. They could always roll the increase into the price of their store items; I'd've suspected that they had been doing this all along anyway, just at a lower level.

It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out. Maybe eBay wants to just kill the stores, the way they wanted to kill half.com (and look how neat that worked out).

RBinTex...., my decision is not based on the fees as I couldn't care less about that.

But on other criteria such as time which is a big one. Hey it took 2 years to put a clickable link in my signature line. Imagine the chaos on ebay!image

I just killed my store. Reasons?

    1) Getting expensive
    2) Moving to a far away place in hell.
  • Ebay is making it easier for someone else to come in and take their market share.
