Should I buy this coin?

I came across this 1884 S Morgan recently. I am pretty interested in buying the coin. These photos were taken by the seller; I have had the coin in hand and it is attractive. I am trying to convince myself it is a poorly struck unc but I don't think so.

What's it worth? I collect VAMs in mint state but this key date is a nice looking coin. Opinions appreciated.

Going by the picture, I'd grade it AU-50. There seems to be enough wear in the fields to firmly place it in the AU column with no hedging. This coin has no claim to MS-60 status.

The 1884-S is a very scarce coin in true Mint State, but there are many, many AUs around. Very high end AU-58s are worth perhaps $1,500 because the MS-60 bid is over $4 grand, but ordinary AU's have a wholesale bid of just $210. I'd peg this coin to that wholesale price and act accordingly.

  • Thanks Bill for the input. It looks a lot nicer in hand but I graded it at AU 55 when I looked at it last week. The sellers is bieng reasonable so I will probably go for it. I will post better pictures when I get it.

I've noticed that some scans and pictures emphasize some marks WAY out of proportion. I thought about that when I started to write the post, but decided to go with what I saw. Still if you think that this coin is an AU-55, you should not be paying premium money for it. It’s only the SUPER SLIDERS with lots of luster and white surfaces that crack the $1,000 buck mark.

Looks like a nice AU to me. You probably have to pay strong price to acquire but don't buy it as uncirculated.

  • Thanks I am paying lower AU for it so I am going for the coin.
