Here's some of the history of your new commem as I've written before on the forum......
Interesting fact is that Stone Mtn GA was the home of the KKK in 1925 and they were a strong proponent of this commemorative coin. The legislation was somewhat controversial due to the involvement of known KKK members through their influence on the Daughter's of the Confederacy. The authorizing legislation states the reason for the commemorative as:
To commemorate the beginning of the carving of Stone Mountain, in the state of Georgia on June 18,1923, and to memorialize President Warren G. Harding, in whose administration the work was begun.
Note that there is no mention of Harding on the coin. The text was a ruse to get the legislation passed.
The design on the coin is not the actual image on Stone Mountain, which is the world's largest relief sculpture covering over three acres on the face of world's largest exposed granite monolith. The design on the coin is Gutzon Borglum's original design for Stone Mountain. Gutzon Borglum left (fired?) due to a funding dispute and any work completed under his reign was blown off the mountain. Borglum is actually better known for his work on the smaller Mount Rushmore which he began after leaving the Stone Mtn project.
The carving we see today on the mountain was not completed until the 1970s. The third figure in the carving is Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America.
