Its dipped and a little survived ? Its a original coin with just a little tone ? The tone is real and not AT ? Hmmm.....I do not know.

Bonus Part: I do not know for sure. I see this very often when looking for Mercs.

Traces of orginal toning must be referring to organic animal or vegetable matter left on a coin after wiping or a light dip.

could mean it's just beginning to tone. PLENTY of non-messed-with coins have traces of original tone

I agree with Ken ... Incomplete dip image

No clue on the ID, though.

It means the oxidation was so thick it could not be dipped off........or, it means run away, far away!
  • I believe I have seen that description on coins offered by Heritage. It typically is used on coins graded XF or AU.

To me, it means that the coin is mostly toning-free, but that it has a little bit of/hints of/some toning. And, that the toning is original.
  • To me, it could mean any number of the thoughts mentioned above. My thought is that I would not buy it without having it in my hand first.

I'm only guessing here, but that sounds like wording Heritage would use.

Either an unmessed with coin with just a little bit of toning, or (more likely, IMO) a toned coin that was dipped, but a little of the toning still remains.

It means that there is a small amount of toning on the coin. But it is a strange way of saying it.

Some of the first colors to start after dipping silver are brown and "gold".
