VG10? I guess I expect better for a VG10.

Seller states this is a VG-10. Heck, I don't even know what it is.

    It's a 1793 Chain Cent. It's in a PCI holder.

Could it have corroded in the holder? I can NOT possibly believe any real grading service (even NTC or ACG) would do something that dumb! My other though is, maybe the coin was switched. image

    Think again.

To play devil's advocate a little, they probably graded the coin on what its technical detail was (beneath the corrosion). And there might be more of that detail visible with the coin in hand. Could be the scan or photo exaggerated the considerable corrosion present. Maybe they graded it VG10, but they almost certainly red-labeled it for "heavy corrosion" or "environmental damage".

    It 's a typo. It 's VP10 (Very Poor).

I think what the seller is trying to say is that "it would grade VG10 if you the corrosion hadn't worn away all the detail and horribly pockmarked the coin". You just have to know how to read between the lines.

I think that it might be a Chain Cent, looking at the one neck line that I can see.

There must be more on the reverse. Usually the reverse of these things will have a chain visible, even on the really doggy specimens. This one is beyond doggy. It's ratty. It grades less than Basal State -1 .

I think it must have been a "Very Good" detector find dug from 10 inches of dirt.

  • Does look like an early cent, perhaps 1793-4 doesn't it? The reverse should be a liitle nicer to be true "shot" P-1, net B-1!!
