Oopsie one didn't get sealed very well

I went to crack out a nickel and couldn't find my crackers so I decided to just use the trusty hammer. One nice rap on the side and the darn thing just popped open right along the seam. It appears that this one didn't get sealed very well becuase I could easily insert a coin right back into it and with a little super glue nobody would be the wiser. Thank goodness I'm not like that.

  • I have had 2-3 of them where it didn't even need a hammer, just picked them out of the box and they opened right up. They got sent back to NGC.

That's inexcusable, they need to fix that ASAP.

If it's a "common" thing to SOME degree, then it makes me wonder about how many actually have been switched.

Just cracked a 1965 SMS Kennedy and the same thing happened. Split neatly all the way around and opened right up. I wish they were all that easy.

yep that happens....years ago there was someone ( i know who but im not saying but he isnt in the business anymore ) who was doing his own pcgs saints..he had the slabs and the inserts and made his own...you could tell by the serifs on the lettering

problem for him is..."we " can grade and he was hunted down and jailed for a few years...not to mention banished and relieved of all his money

so if you think you will get burned by this...not likely...the slab police are always watching

Making a counterfeit insert and this scenario are different. Perhaps the grading company should be held just a liable as the person committing the fraud for not sealing the coins correctly--as far as the unfortunate purchaser might be concerned. Perhaps this is why holders are advertised as "tamper resistant" and not "tamper proof"-------------------------BigE

Good thing you're not saying who since it's such a big secret. image

  • Making a counterfeit slab versus a slab that did not seal is a big difference.

Not really the same thing since his slab shells were also fakes

I don't own any SEGS slabs, but this discussion and SEGS' slabs (not resealable even with the hammer of the god Thor) seems to be one problem about which SEGS need not worry.

not really if you would be thinking like i was thinking...i was thinking and trying to say...all collectors should know how to grade...that being said if all did know how to grade then putting a 64 into a 65 slab would be mute as nobody would buy it as they would say...ewu...what a dog....thus it would be of no moment if it was a counterfeit or cracked and reglued

one of the biggest problems in this hobby is the grading services have the collectors by the short hairs..and they know it...way too many collectors buy the plastic ...thus he who makets the most is the most accepted....when in reality what we collecotrs should want is the best for what we pay..problem is collectors ..while they are getting much better arent there yet...personally i see many lost opportunites by collectors....for example last november in balt i brought out one of my old ngc coins to sell....i had a dealer get it to the # 1 and the # 2 registry guys..both had the coin in a 66 holder...but this was a moose and it had to be better than what they had...they said put it in a pcgs holder..i said why...you need this coin...they said put it in a pcgs holder...so i did and i was disappointed as it cam back cam 66....now its a pop 1 coin and both are drooling....but i was not in balitmore anymore..i was in dallas and an upgrader bought from me for 2000 more than i was asking....he tried it for a cam67 and it worked...and the price tripled

fact is..if the #1 and # 2 guys bought the coin instead of the plastic they would of made all the money...however the smartest made it...the upgrader

another case in point...at a fun show i was bidding on a cleveland in ngc 66...i bid 10 times bid and droped out...heck i bid all the money and got smoked....the coin sold for 25 times bid...and now resides in a pcgs 68 holder and the price is 100 times bid....here again...a lesson learned

but i have to say..buy the coin not the plastic
