How about an Einstein Comm coin

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's introducing his Theory of Relativity. I think it would be great if the US Mint could come up with a Commemortive coin in his honor, though I'm sure it's too late to come up with one this year. One side of the coin could have his image, the other side could have his famous E=mc2 (that would be an expotenial 2). That would be so cool. A tribute to one of the greatest minds of our times, if not of all time. Although not born in America, he did become an American citizen later on in his life.

  • It would need 3-4 years ahead of the date to make it. Legislation would have to be passed and designs, engraving, etc done.

  • Yes, it would have to go through all that process. Still... I would sure love to see such a coin.

Nice idea, maybe they should just place his image on the half dollar. I'm sure no one would notice except for collectors.

Placing Einstein on a commem would serve two purposes:

1 - Celebrate a very amazing person with an incredible mind
2 - replace Eunice Shriver as the homeliest person on a US coin.

Yeah, the 2008 Commems commemorating the NASA program is in the House and Senate right now... image

And the "Einsteins" in Congress hardly ever think that far ahead. They did move pretty fast to ram the Virginia Jefferson Nickel down
    everyone's throat though.

    E=mc² (charmap is your friend)

For the usual process. If someone of sufficient power said "Do it" it could be done by summer. But precious few people think of scientist these days. We're more likely to see a Kobe Bryant commem than a Albert Einstein.

    An American.
  • I personally do not think an Einstein commem would be appropriate. Commemoratives should be for major events which affected our country. Einstein was born in Germany and did his research about his theories while living in Switzerland well before coming to America.

  • Pretty sure his discovery that mass and energy are related to each other and can be converted to and from each other (hence, E=mc²), which lead to the atom bomb, which we used to end WWII, was a pretty dramatic event for our country, given we aren't speaking German or Japanese right now, relatively speaking.

I love physics and relativity, and would be all for an Einstein commem, or a whole slew of scientific commems.

What about an Igor Sikorsky Commemorative? All the Lives that have been saved through the use of his helicopters deserves something.

The Swiss beat us to it......in 1979.....I always liked this coin....

  • East German also issued a commemorative 5 mark coin for Einstein in 1979 as well. KM 72.

About the only direct contribution Einstein made to the Manhatten Project was the letter he wrote to Roosevelt urging him to approve the research project.
  • That's a pretty famous letter that - 1939. Caused some controvery. That Swiss commem above is beautiful image

Hey, the man has an element named after him (einsteinium). Not many can say that!

    He prolly deserves a commem.

    Here's my design concept.

(and before anyone lectures me, I grew up proudly in Oak Ridge. I probably know more about Einstein's positions on it than most people)

Hey, we should include all the folks at Los Alamos - after Einstein of course...

Regardless of where they originated (like many of our "immigrant" scientists) they helped us nuke Japan before Japan or Germany could nuke us, both of whom were working hard to do so. As a former Marine I note that the anticipated ˆmilitaryˆ casualties were estimated at over one million for a conventional invasion of Japan. After confering with the Chinese, the Koreans, the people in Malaysia, the Philippines and others I conclude that Von Braun, Oppenheimer, and to his chagrin Einstien, helped the planet survive for another fifty-sixty years.

It may suck that someone so brilliant could indirectly be involved with potential global destruction, but hey, we're still here.

    Thanks Al. image

Um, we can do that as soon as they include Oak Ridge. image
  • An Einstein commem would be pretty neat. His face on the obverse and his famous quote.."There are two things infinate to man. The universe and mans stupidity." on the reverse. Don't know if they could fit that on the reverse. They might need to mint a dollar commem.image
