Ebay sellers : What would you do?

You list an item for sale on Ebay. In the listing, you say that you do not accept Paypal or personal checks.

The buyer (no negative or neutral feedback) sends you a personal check.

What, (if anything) would you do?

Comments

  • I would e-mail the buyer with two options: return the check for a money order or he will have to wait 10-15 days for the check to clear before it is shipped.

deposit the check and wait till it clears, easy as can be.
You may want to email him(her) just to be nice.image

If he has a lot of positive feedback, deposit the check and mail the coin immediately.

I've never had a problem with personal check on eBay out of hundreds received. I suppose the day I do I'll change my tune.

Deposit the check, thank him for payment and tell him you will ship the coin in 5 business days. Edited to add: don't neg or neutral him for a mistake. Save the criticism for those who deserve it. Give him a positive after the check clears.
  • I am an eBay seller who really wants to sell things. So I take PayPal and checks. Why not? Once the check clears you have cash. You don't have to ship until the check clears.

For those who make buyers jump through hoops it would help to list those hoops in a bold 32 point font, each hoop on a separate line at the beginning and end of the auction. Make sure the options you choose on the eBay listing pages are totally consistent with your rules. This may scare off some bidders who prefer to pay by check. (that is fine by me, they may bid on my auctions instead image )

If the check clears then leave positive. They did pay for the auction in good funds.

Check his feedback. If it is good, cash the check and send the coin when it clears. If his feedback number is low, or isn't good, send it back and refer to your clearly stated refusal to take personal checks. Reconsider taking Paypal. The buyers want it...they really want it and bid more. I closed 10 lots last night (books not coins). Seven have already been paid for thru PayPal and are on their way to their new owners. I won't take personal checks at all now that I take PayPal. The reason has to do with the VERY high fees my bank charges if a deposited check bounces.

I wish more sellers would do this. I have a rating of 58 with 100 total feedbacks left for a feeback rating of 100%. Out of about 10 checks I've sent I've only had one seller say that he received my check and he's shipping the item now (and that was yesterday). I always use the checkout now feature that sends an email saying how I'll be paying and then I email them saying the check is in the mail. The other thing I hate is when the check has cleared my bank and they still haven't shipped it. With the new check laws, checks are clearing in 2-3 days not 10-15.

With the exception of 2 items the checks have been under $20 and they still won't ship until the check clears.

Just my little rant for today.

Depends how you feel about depositing the check.

My credit Union charges ME $25. if I deposit a check that bounces. If the check bounces what do you think would be the chance of recovering the fee from the buyer?

If you don't want to take the chance, just return the check to him with a note about your payment terms.

    Joe.
