Just to when you feel secure in your thought process that you'll only accept confirmed & verified PayPal eBay buyers in the future, I can can tell you first hand that you can get ripped off by them, too!
Another important lesson to take from this - DO NOT deposit money orders into a bank account assuming they are good. Take them to the post office and CASH them.
I just got off the phone with a postal inspector. Sure enough, they staked out the PMB and caught this idiot. Big surprise, he was an employee at one of the PO's distribution centers. They have accounted for the entire block of 400 MOs, apparently he sent out about 300 of them before he was caught, and they recovered the remaining blanks.

That's great news, Eric.
That said, I can't help but feel enraged. Postal workers operate under a sacred trust. I hope they make an example out of this guy.
I agree. While I feel fortunate that I caught this before sending the merchandise, the inspector told me I was one of the few who caught the bogus MO before shipping. A lot of sellers got ripped off, and from the sounds of it they won't be getting much back. Most of what this guy "bought" was bullion and expensive watches that were easily turned into cash.
It's about time we heard of one of these scumbags being caught. It still steams me that we pay extra to insure our packages from the very people we pay to ship them. Someone should step in and tell the USPS that ALL packages will be insured at NO cost to the customers since THEY are the thieves.
I went a deposited a money order at my local back yesterday and they now call to verify all money orders (they just started this), so I guess this type of fraud is on the rise.

If I may use a fark.com tag here:
Did he really think he was going to get away with this? Good show, Eric!

I would hope background checks, etc. would make your average postal employee more honest than the average person, but, sadly, there are still crooks and scumbags that slip through.
What concerns me even more are the stories of grading submissions stolen in the past by employees at the Newport Beach and Sarasota Post Offices. I'm sure it is obvious to these employees that millions worth of rare coins pass through every day. Given that, I would think the Postmasters of these locations would secure them like a Federal Reserve Branch!

Cash can be bogus as well.

Thank you for the Postal Money Order info.
I have been selling coins full-time for about six years, and have not been hit with a stolen Postal Money Order. Now I never will!
Sometime I'll post a few of my scary stories for everyone to hopefully learn from.
