Okay, tell the truth....

Lets say you went to an Estate Auction where the original owner had passed away and the ungrateful children were auctioning off the parents very extensive collection.

Among all of the items you come across a box of missalenous(sic) Silver rounds. Not many people have bothered to even look through the box except to add up the rounds so to multiply the number of rounds by melt to come to their max bid.

In conducting an extensive examination of the contents of the box you discover that mixed in with the Silver rounds are about 5 - 8 Platinum rounds.

Do you say anything or do you bid to take them home?

  • Bid. It is an auction. It is not your place to tell the auctioneer or your competition what something is worth. You can do that by bidding higher then the other people and winning.

I'd prefer to find out that one of the silver rounds was a crusty old 1796 half dollar that no one looked at very closely.

I would tell the children and/or auctioneer. But, frankly, I'm torn on this one. If it were an auction run by a coin dealer or house that specialized in coins, I'd say every man for himself and keep my mouth shut and rip them. But, operating on the assumption that this is a general merchandize auctioneer as estate sales usually are and the children are not knowledgeable collectors, I'd have to inform them.

  • There's more to life than just money.. I would tell the family.
Also, don't be so sure you are not the only one who saw them.

  • Tell them how much it is really worth and offer to sell it for them for a 15% cut. Everybody wins. image

I have ran into this type of situation several time over the years.
So many times the auctioneer could care less.
I gave up trying to help. Now I just bid and take it home.

  • This is only reason to go to estate auctions. Otherwise they're a terrible expensive waste of time.

  • Hello all,

From the way you described the kids, it sounds like you know them.

Either way, if it's an Auction house, it's their problem. Bid.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.
  • Ungrateful children. Probably so. Remember the Twilight Zone episode when the old man's ungrateful greedy children had to put on those ugly masks before they could inherit anything. I have some ugly masks ready for vwhen the time comes. image
