Would you ???????

I turned over my set of Seated Halves to ANACS at the FUN show......... Before you go knocking my choice of TPG services, remember that ANACS is the only one of the "Big 3" that will attribute by die variety............. And that's the way I collect 'em......... They accepted close to 300 pieces from me, and when we were through, they offered me the chance to "pedigree" my set at no additional charge............. If it were you, would you pedigree it? and if so, what kind of pedigree would you use? Personally, I'm leaning towards NOT , but I ask you forum members for your input.
Thanks, Jim

Me, no. I don't really see the value in placing a name on a coin holder.

You have the coin, it should speak for itself.

Do you have pics of what you sent in? I'd love to look through 300 seated coins.
  • ANACS is a good service. I would pedigree it if given the chance if I was planning on keeping the set, but if I was going to sell it right after it got slabbed, I would not pedigree it.

If they aren't charging extra for the pedigree, why not? I've yet to try and sell anything from my collection and I could care less about pedigrees when I'm buying. But, when the grandkids (if they ever happen) get the collection, it'll be a little more personal.

Actually it would depend first, on the quality of the contents of the set and then second, on the added cost (if any) to pedigree.

Wow, you own over 300 of em? Congratulations! Must have taken a long time to do that.

Far as pedigree, think of something intimate to you, that you like, and name it.

Seriously, if you plan on keeping the collection for the long haul and possibly showcasing the collection, then definately get a pedigree. If you're planning on constantly turning pieces from it and/or liquidating it in the near future, then don't bother.

I think the pedigree is a unique choice. First it might be neat to see the coins turn up in the future and know that you once owned it. On the other hand a buyer might not want a pedigree label on a coin. When I'm looking at a coin to buy, I just want the grade and and Vam. If the coin has a unusual pedigree label to it, I would think of it as a gimmick label and nothing else. But it is kind of cool in a way and I can figure that your collection took you years to get to where your at now, so yes I think you deserve it.

But, if it where my coins my first choice would be no and if I did do a pedigree it would be something classy.

Congrats on such a fantastic collection! Maybe sometime you can post pics of some of the highlights of your collection which I'm sure
everyone would enjoy. As far as the pedigree on the slab, I personally wouldn't do it to my collection. Pedigrees just do nothing for me,
    but that's just me.

    Longtimecollector:

    Nice meeting you at FUN.

Regarding getting a pedigree on your Seated Halves, why not, especially if you plan on keeping them.
As Cameron mentioned, if you plan on turning them in a short period of time, I wouldn't bother.

My SLQ set went into PCGS for regrade and pedigree designation while I was at FUN. I plan on keeping this set for quite awhile. I also will upgrade the set, but probably not dispose of the upgraded coins, just start registering them in a secondary set. Two years ago, I had six sets of SLQ registered on the PCGS & NGC web sites. I know that there are more SLQ sets to be assembled in the future.

My Barber Quarters and Halves in other TPG holders went into PCGS for cross-over & regrade, however I won't be getting a pedigree on these two sets until they are 100% complete. Finding a 1901-S Quarter and the 01-S & 05-O Halves seem to almost impossible in the grade I collect them in (AU 53-58). When and if that happens, then maybe I send the sets into PCGS for pedigree. These sets are also not for sale and I also plan on keeping them for many years.

The Pedigree is only for pride of ownership, as I know my name isn't worth a plug nickel over the grey sheet for the coin. I'm no Eliasberg/Bass/Hugon, etc.

Sounds like a great collection, a fine accomplishment. I'd pedigree it whether I was selling or holding. You only live once, why not put your mark on the hobby in a small way?

Just have them put "Mad Marty Collection" on them!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
