PCGS vs NGC Ike Grading

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
I have several PCGS MS65 and MS66 Clad Ikes that are just head and shoulders nicer than some of my other Ikes in the same grade pcgs holder. Any opinions on whether they will upgrade at NGC? To be more specific, most are 1976 P/D Type 1/2 PCGS MS65 coins that I think should be in 66 holders, but I sent several to PCGS for regrade and thay all came back the same grade. I am planning on cracking them out rather than submitting for crossover to NGC. Anyone have any comments or any experience with crossing PCGS Ikes to NGC?

Thanks,
Charlie

NGC went through a bad period when they graded a lot modern coins very poorly. They just did not take the time to get it right. They were like a "slab mill" that was supplying modern coins for telemarketers to use to rip-off the poorly informed. Of late I think that they have improved and have tightened their standards.

I have also seen some pretty shabby stuff in PCGS holders when it comes to modern coins graded MS-65. I'm basing this on some the state quarters that I have seen, which were no more than nice pocket change. The coins had way too many obvious marks to be graded MS-65 IMO.

In short, I think that you might be wasting your money if you send these coins to NGC. First of all you might not get an upgrade. Second if you do the market will not reward you for it. When it comes to modern coins, PCGS rules.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I agree with Bill's post. I have seen many, MANY, NGC slabbed IKEs that I would says was overgraded by 1.5 points or so. In fact, about 5 months ago, I went to a dealer's shop in south Florida and looked at 100 or so that were graded MS64 to MS66-all clad unc IKEs. To me, the MS66 IKEs would only grade MS64 at PCGS, although a couple might have graded MS65.

I bought a 1974-D in 65 from the dealer. I would have called it a 64, but I sold it on eBay for $23.00 and some change.

I think Gary has crossed some NGC graded IKEs to PCGS with some success. I think it was a 71D in NGC 67 that he crossed to PCGS as a 67. It may have been someone else with the crossovers, but I do recall that particular crossover.

Also, I have seen on eBay where an NGC MS66 77 or 78 P/D coin sold for what a PCGS MS65 of the same date/MM sold for.

So, after all this babbling, I would say it would be a waste of time and money.

In fact, I was going to send some proof coins into NGC, but decided just to sell them on eBay as they are.
