How often do you pare down your collection?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
It seems that every couple of years I go back through my collection and cull out the coins that don't really fit my interests anymore. I was wondering how often anyone else goes through their holdings and re-evaluates. I guess the further I go down the road in collecting the more I end up wanting to follow the box of 20 approach.

  • I've been doing some housekeeping since August. I've been steadily selling my circulated coins in order to buy uncirculated coins and concentrate on a few series. Who needs 80 AU 40% JFK Halves, a dozen FA2 Barber quarters and F12 Walkers, slider mercs, and circ buffalos when I can have a beautifully toned merc with full bands or a GEM BU jefferson nickel set littered with rainbow album toners? Yes, the face of my collection is in a state of change this year.

I always sell dupes after upgrading them. After accumulating several, on Ebay they go (as I'm doing right now). Also, when I look at my collection and determine it's taking up too much space, I start looking for other things to sell.

I go thru the collection about twice ayear. I eliminate those coins that I should not have bought,

coins that dont interest me anymore and the lower grade coins. I do this to upgrade the collection

and to raise money for new purchases .

  • I've begun paring down my collection this year to get into a more confortable cash position per Old Bear's advise.

    All the time...
    I sell the duplicates...
buy in bulk, keep what I want and sell the rest...
I slab nice coins from mint and proof sets and sell those...
and I build my primary registry set and when complete I sell that and move on to a new series.

  • Prior to finding the areas I like, I had a eclectic collection. Then I purged all of the odd lots and now I only sell when I've upgraded

Windycity seems to have a good handle on things.

I have just started selling lower level spares and coins outside the two series that I collect. I am better at buying than selling.

    Added:

I also have sent a pant load of NGC proofs in for Presidential Review. If they cross they go into the collection. If not then going to Heritage or Boards. Quite a few top pop NGC coins in there.

I also emptied the closet of Morgans - all green holdered. Getting them together for sale, but waiting on VAMs in PCGS. A few are VAMS.

Selling my extra raw proofs to the local store at extra good prices to help keep the store lively.

I do housekeeping once or twice a year. I sell a few on the boards, the rest on Ebay.

Then I use the free cash to buy more coins!

I did a serious cull last year. I found I had some coins just so I could complete registry sets that were not important to me. The excess coins included

    Proof Modern Commems ($10/$5/$1/50c)
    Proof Modern Eagles (Gold/Silver/Platinum)
Proof Post 1950 coins (but I kept the full set of Ikes!)
Raw coins including Whitman folders, bulk silver, wheat cents

Knowing I was moving and would be locking the collection away for years also impacted my decision.

Yeah, some of my purchases were influenced a bit by registry or type set considerations. Another reason to get rid of them. image I think my collecting interests are eclectic: as long as each one is exquisite they will go together no matter how mismatched they are. Maybe I can swing a big trade with a dealer? image
  • I have usually tried to sell off undergrades when I get to twenty, but right now I'm sitting with 43 slabed coins and a platinum proof set to sell. I just haven't had time to list them for sale.

When I get 5 or 6 culls/dupes they go to ebay.
  • Hey Badger...drop me a PM when you have your green holder Morgans ready for sale. I might be interested in some of them

  • Pare down? For me paring down means "I've decided not to buy that one".

Annually. I started doing so about 4 weeks ago and hope to be complete by the end of February. Its been about 18 months so I'm a bit late.....usually its a mid year activity.
