1979 hockey

the usual line of "graded cards never come up for sale" doesnt seem to explain the lack of interest on the soon ending ebay auctions . i guess there are only a few of us collecting this set.

wow. even the 9's are still at a buck. i'd imagine you'll get a few more bids on those at least, but i'd also guess that 8's are a surefire money loser with this set, even if you submitted on a $5 special. i hope not, for your sake, but i've never really noticed a strong interest in building either '79 set, really. i actually like the design, but maybe the sensitive blue borders dissuade people.

also, $40 and $60 BIN's on psa 8 semi-stars might turn off a few people. i know one can bid the buck and forget about the BIN, but when i see insane BIN's like that, i sometimes think, "this guy's a loon, i'm moving on." though maybe it's just me that does that.

thanks for the tips yawie. i guess you're right with those bin's. they are tougher than the commons. i did submit some on the $5 special and some from the last special. i just hold them raw and wait for the specials. everyone seems to like the design but not too many collectors building the sets.

there also might be a general disillusionment with this segment of the hockey market right now. given some of the recent discussion about hockey cards here, i've kinda just said to hell with modern and quasi-vintage hockey cards. i was thinking about slowly working on an '81 opc set, but ended up listing my whopping two cards after some of the excrement hit the fan here the other day. i don't know how many people read these boards or if any others feel the same way as i do, but at this point at least, i'm very unlikely to buy or submit any cards from '66 on. it's too bad, really.

yes i have been following the discussions and we are at a sad spot right now. i am going to still pick up some vintage items here and there but i will shy away from anything that looks too good. i didnt think it would reach 1979 but it may have. i hope hockey rebounds.

  • I hope it rebounds since it appears that I am the only one trying to complete sets in it. Yikes!!!, if anyone has nice RAW (OPC) for sale let me know.

    Cheers,

darren, where are you on the registry? i feel like i'm the only one . raw opc worth grading-theres definitely none on ebay. i have an unopened box and i think that's my best chance. i have about 100 cards to add to my opc set one of these days. my topps set is complete and i upgrade when i can. i have lots of topps extras

  • With all the discussion its interesting that I just submitted a 79 Topps Gretzky and PSA would not grade - said it was 'insufficient size.'

I bought it with a complete set back in 1984 so I would be very surprised if its trimmed. I'll check it more carefully when I get the shipment back. Maybe the graders read the boards.

  • I am not on the Topps 1979 Registry, but I am for the 1980-81 OPC, and 1985-86 OPC. I have a lot to send in for 1980 to get me around 80% and a good chuck of the 1986 OPC set too. I have had little luck with ebay and will start looking for boxes someday. I want to go after the 1979 OPC but feel I would pay a premium for anything already graded, so I Am gun shy on that one.

can you post a picture of the gretzky when you get it back? i have had that happen to me with commons that i had just pulled from packs. they looked fine. i was going to send them in again sometime down the road to see if same thing happens. funny, its happened to 3 cards in particular more than once. not any gretzky's though. i do have a real nice raw one i want to have graded. great centering but a little staining/printing defect on the top. s/b real interesting.

If I had seen this post sooner, I probably would've thrown some bids on the 9s. They come up so rarely, I don't scan for them very often. Personally, though, I'm holding out for OPCs, 8s or better. But even Topps, at $4 or less, 9s would be very desirable.
