The coins from football tosses

Watching the Steelers game overtime coin toss it looked they flipped a Morgan at least from the reverse. Does anyone know if they ever sell these game coins, or what type they are? Seems like it could be a new slab gimmick for the TPG's, gets the sports fans involved.

Good idea. Although you are talking about a very limited amount of product each year. I don't think you could charge all that much for them either.

I noticed it, too. I would pay big $$$ for it as a football collectible. Don't you think the Three Rivers Collection should own it?

Yeah, I saw the morgan eagle reverse too, as I was trying to avoid a heart attack and hyperventilation....

Lol. I noticed it as well and wondered how long it would be before a post was made here. From what I could see, there was a lot of reflection on the fields of the reverse, so they either tossed a proof coin, or some type of replica.

I saw it too. I thought it was pretty neat. I was waiting for a repeat of the coin flip fiasco from a few years back when the Steelers were also involved.

I think they're some sort of token or medalliony thing. I've never seen 'em use a real coin.

But then I never watch football, either. My personal opinion of it (and most televised sports) is that watching bread rise and then eventually turn moldy would be more interesting.

The coin used at the start of the STL/ATL game was not a Morgan. It looked more like a silver round than a coin, so I wonder if the head referee gets to decide what coins is flipped?

The coin, to me, looked like a circulated Morgan. Probably the Ref's pocket piece used specifically for football games.

I said to myself "Hey, was that a Morgan Dollar??"

It looked circulated to me. I actually keep a '71 Ike in my pocket for coin tosses. I use it quite frequently. When i score a cheap, common Morgan dollar i'll swap the Ike out for it.

I agree that that the Steelers got lucky, but A Win is still a Win.
My heart can't take another game like that.

Maybe they used one of those 1889-CC National Collectors Mint 100 mil slver plated copies. (I wouldn't know, I don't watch sports so I din't see it.)

Yep....we all have eagle eyes don't we as that was the first time I have ever seen an actual U.S mint coin used...typically they are tokens of some sort......pretty cool guys

A coworker does a lot a football refereeing at the high school level. I gave him an 1885-? as a coin toss coin. It was free to me and had been cleaned AND polished heavily. I felt obligated to give him something since the guy who gave me the coin was our boss. All of the coins were heavily polished and sticky from the 20th century type set holder they were taped in.

I wonder if any of the high school kids think much of it when he shows it to them right before every game. It's in the rules he must show them which side is heads and which is tails prior to the toss.

how true. if #9 Hall was still on the team this wouldnt have happened. i think this is the end of # 6 as we know it. retire the #6 and burn it. no more # 6's

Yes it was a circulated Morgan reverse, and NFL rules I think prohibit the refs from profiting on NFL related memorabilia. But a charity auction might work!

A charity auction would be nice. That would be a great piece to have, especially for the sports loving coin collector.

I think they use commemorative like coins... at least for the Super Bowl, and probally for the Championship games too

I believe you are right. I think I remember in SuperBowls past them showing the coin before the toss, and it was designed especially for the occasion.
