Toned Morgan - Real or AT?

Hey, I wanted to get into the Real vs. AT action, am I too late? Here is Morgan I picked up today with wild colors.

I'd say AT, but it is a shiner, good pick.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Tough call. If that were one of those 1960's era keepsake holders, I'd lean toward natural since I've seen similar colors produced by them. But, with a copyright date of 2001 I'm a little leary.

Here's a similar one that I know is the real deal:

It was in a late 1960's Bankers Trust holder.

  • That one is tough. It looks like NT target toning, but the small spotches and the recent holder place it into question.

However, one possibility is that it was in a promotional board (i.e. "Tidy House") and perhaps the board fell apart and the coin was "re-holdered" into the Harris holder. The Harris holder most likely did not cause that toning.

I'm leaning NT, and I like it. I do not know if it would slab as market acceptable, perhaps those that have seen a few thousand more toners than I have can weigh in on this.

The blue color seems a bit off...I'd say likely AT.image

I'm not certain but I lean a little toward AT on that piece. AT or NT, I like the look of it.

I have one with that exact look, on my Holey Coin Vest (AT and holed, LOL). It has sorta "crayony" colors. It looks great on the vest, though. I was happy to finally find a nice looking 19th century holey Morgan for wearing. image

Knowing a certain seller has been selling a ton of Morgans on eBay in those holders I say ATed.

  • Can't tell from the picture...I have a morgan that looks just like it in an ANACS slab so it could be NT......if the colors are accurate it doesn't look quite right, but without the coin in hand.....I can't say for sure.

Here's an 1898 I just bought last week on Ebay:

I would have to vote AT......

  • The blue seems off to me, too. AT.

Ok, I have to chime in with my slabbed Morgan that most folks think is AT. I am going to try and unload it today in Holmdel coin show.....wish me luck. 1900-O in a Green PCI

AT, doubt if it would holder @ PCGS.

I'm leaning toward AT, only b/c I had one that looked similar and it was AT also.

The real question here is, do you like it? If the coin makes you happy, enjoy it. If not, dip it or sell it.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I'm leaning towards FT. FT=Forged Toning.

How can the circular bluish part of the toning on the reverse have less radius (as measured from the center of the coin) if acquired in a genuine way than the circular bluish toning on the obverse (close to the rim)?

That could happen if it was stored flat with one side down over an extended period of time. The two sides might tone a bit differently, or at a different rate, because the up side would have slightly more atmospheric exposure.

Or, it could be AT. image

  • I guess it is never too late for a NT vs AT thread image The colors seem pretty wild to me. I don't like the spots of color, I do like how the violet is deep in the crevices of the feathers while it is bluer on top. Seems like the majority says AT and I don't doubt that but I don't consider myself knowledgeable on the subject.

I cracked her out of that holder and took more photos using natural light, maybe the new photos will confirm opinions or change some.

I'll buy it. PM me, if you want to sell it.
  • I love the color. AT or NT, I wouldn't touch it. Not knowing how the artificial toning was done (if it was done), I'd be fearful it might affect the nice color.
  • The Morgan Russ showed is the real deal. The others are the work of coin docters IMHO to try to simulate that type of toning--but they can't get the blue quite right. You do see that color is lesser coinage and some proofs, but not natually toned business strike Morgans where the storage history is known.

  • At last year's ANA I purchased a Morgan that was toned very similar to that coin - the coin I purchased came from a group of coins that had been given away years ago as a Bank promotion in the Milwaukee area. THey were stored in a sponge rubber "donut" inside a plastic container - hence the somewaht unnatural toning look. Rubber is made using a sulphur and causes Silver to "Tarnish" very quickly.

  • Outside of the vast majority (maybe 98%) of the colorfully toned Morgans with blue edges from roll, bag, album or A/T
doctered enhancement---there are the few from oddball storage methods. Some in fact are even easy to identify like the horrible storage "slabs" of Redfield/Paramount Morgans. Others are a little more offbeat, and so it's important to document and preserve their origins so that we can learn more. But the point is-- it's a fact of life that there was a large number of toned Morgans with a little dab of of light irredesent blue added by docters over the NT color from 1992 to around 1998 and they did get into holders. Close examination is required of the comparative colors in adjacent high and low spots of the surfaces, and other diagnostics.
