Should I sell some coins at FUN ?

Since this is my first FUN show, I really don't know what to expect. I am certain there will be many coins that I will feel I must buy for my collection. Since I'm sure I will quickly exhaust my readily available spending money, would the FUN show be a good place to sell some of my dup's or better coins that I am willing to part with for quick cash so I can purchase the gotta have coins I find there?

What coins will be a easy sell? Morgans, Gold ?

Is it reasonable to expect cash from the dealers that offer to buy my coins?

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Randy

Most dealers will pay you cash if you ask for it, but many of us prefer checks. Carrying cash is always a bigger risk for dealers and collectors. All you need is for one crook to see you getting paid in cash. He might well follow you out of the building and relieve you of it perhaps in violent manner. For that reason I often don't go to shows with a lot of cash.

Things are a lot cleaner with checks. AND among FUN dealers, 99.99% of the checks will be good. I have gotten ONE bad check from a dealer in 10 years of business, and he made good on it right away. My experience with some collectors has not been as good.

Morgan Dollars and gold are good items to bring to sell at a show. Many people deal in them. If you have high grade modern coins, you might do better on Ebay. With some coins who have know WHO specializes in that area, and modern coins as well as medals, tokens and esoteric die varieties fall into that category.

KNOW what you want for your coins. And KNOW what your coins are worth. When a dealer asks for a price, have one to give him that is reasonable. Running around looking for "bids" will spoil your chances of getting a fair price. Come across as knowledgeable seller, and you will do better.

    Thanks Bill,

I know you're sharing a table with Pete so I'll see you. I told Pete I'd let him look at anything I had first. I understand what your saying about cash. How are most dealers about accepting checks? This is the reason I felt cash would be neccessary. I don't mind accepting checks from the dealers, but what do I buy with?

    Thanks,

Most dealers will take your check if you can get a dealer they know to vouch for you. You can't really trade in third party checks so you will need to have the money on your account or have a way to deposit the checks to your bank in Ft. Lauderdale. If you bank with a large operation, like the Bank of American, you can use the ATM. The new system which has done away with much of the "float" can work to your advantage here.

FUN will be the best time ever to dump rainbow roosevelts -- the market is thin and thinning -- sell them now, or risk losing a fortune. See me to bail you out!image
