That would only be 8x (I think they sold for $25 each). IMO way too much even at the issue price.

What do you think is driving this? The 25,000 production limit?

  • dunno what's driving it ..... I noticed they are going for beteen 60 and 100 bucks. One did sell for $100 yesterday. Wish I had bought more too. Well wish in one hand ..............

  • Did anyone happen to notice the slight difference in the wording for the maximum production of the 2004 Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin and Medal Set?

    << <i>Maximum production is 25,000 sets for 2004. (emphasis added) >>

I took a look through the U.S. Mint's web site and looked for other products that listed limited mintages. All of the other listings I found listed a maximum production by units without "for <year>" specified afterward.

I don't know if it was intentional or not. As it is currently stated, the max total production for those sets are not constrained at all. It only constrains the number of sets to 25,000 for 2004 (even though the sales of the product were not initiated until January 2005).

Another item of interest here is the press release for this issue. It does not list any limited mintage quantities for this product. Compare that to all of the other press releases the U.S. Mint has done for other products with limited mintages. For every other press release I read regarding a product with limited production, it was specified in the release text. Of course, I didn't check every single press release, but I did take a random sample across multiple products that I knew had limited production.

    Draw your own conclusions.

  • How would the value of a 2004 nickel set be changed if more were made with a 2005 date on them?
  • ttownttown Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭
I think what it saying is get ready for an 2005 set with the new nickels.

As the limited production note on the product currently reads (note: I don't know what the intended meaning of it is, just that it is not written as a concrete production number), it leaves the mint the option of producing more 2004 dated sets in 2005 if they want to. It just says it is limited to 25,000 sets for 2004.

It could be that the mint meant "Production limited to 25,000 of the 2004 sets."

I just find it interesting between the combination of how the limited production notice on the set is written and the fact that there is zero mention of limited quantities in the press release when the mint is all over the limited numbers game in press releases for all of their other productions that it pertains to.

It could be just a bit of poor writting by some mint staff person.

  • yes, I am sure they will expand on this with more nickel sets with the 05 - and then 06 nickels too - ie. more new nickel sets. I doubt, however, they will make anymore with 'just' the 04's - that would be silly - but then ...........

For what it's worth, I 'was' told on the phone by a rep that this was a 'one time offer'.

  • Hello All,

They might be following my reasoning:

The 2005 set will be the 2004 set + the 2 new nickels.

I'm waiting till the "full set" comes out, then I'll buy that in qty.

(Plus the buffalo nickel rolls in qty)

I just offered one of my two promised sets on eBay for $70.50 plus $5 for shipping. Presale, but guaranteed that I'd send one of my sets or I'd refund the purchase price plus $10 if the Mint stiffed me.

Must have worked. It sold within about 5 minutes.

This looks a bit silly to me.

You have three coins that can be obtained quite easily from other sources + a silver plated medal and a package. Most collectors don't give a hoot about medals and the box is really nothing special. This looks like one of those short lived fads that will be here today and forgotten tomorrow.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm with BillJones on this one. I saw these, considered ordering, and elected not too. My reasoning was just that--none of the coins in the set was limited in production or of significant value. The reproduction medal and package were the only "limited" parts. I've speculated and won at the mint (if you can call the Buffalo Dollar speculation!), and bet against this one. I can't imagine those prices holding out for any length of time. I could be wrong.... we'll see!

Once again I will say that the medal is/was available in the LC Coin and Currancy set. All these coin can be had but they will cost more the issue price was $19.95

That said it does not matter. Folks are going to sell and folks are going to buy just like we all do. This has nothing to do with right or wrong or fairness or nothing it just is.

  • just thought - maybe the fuel is because this set was 'not' advertised on their 'regular' list??? At least it wasn't on the one that I had printed off their website previously.
