Curious to know what B/M's will be attending, if any are coming from out of town, passing thru Bush (IAH) maybe do a get together at one of the local watering holes- see who is who, only to place a face when chatting here.

If you are coming into IAH and have some concerns- let me know- I kind of make a half hearted attempt at working there- can meet up and try to smoothe the travel in or out for you. Just leave the guns and knives at home.

I do plan to attend but after the Christmas holidays, my wallet alarm is constantly buzzing so my acquisitions may not be as newsworthy as they were after the show back in November at the Hobby Mariot. Would be great to meet and greet fellow board members is some arrangements are made. This is a great show and usually very well attended.

My thought was to meet at Jason's table around lunch- head across the street to that little pub by Minute Maid have a few and go back. My pockets are not dry- but wife said I can buy a 'few' items- yeah she went antiquing today- $600 for 3 dolls! and I spend to much on coins she sez.....

I'd like to see their schedule of events to begin planning for which educational seminars I'd like to attend. This could affect my show social schedule meeting with other forum members... Thanks!

OK, I must confess that I'm going to the show for one reason...to purchase a chinese silver ingot that I saw at the November show. I have seen photos of them and read something about them though I can't remember where. The price is not excessive, probably can be had for about $400 for about $300 melt. I'm assuming that the guy will be there with the ingot. It is like an antique, probably not something that could be easily sold so it will be a trophy or conversation piece but mostly it will be mine so I can learn about who made it and where it came from and when it was made and all that stuff. The merchants would make these and stamp them into oblivion with their seals. The one I saw was pretty cool. I may not buy it but I'm sure gonna be looking at it hard. Since I can't add a member to my indian tribe with the gold indian prices so inflated, I have to go to plan B.

What is everyone else going to look for?

Add in the IRS quarterly filing due by the 18th and I'm right there with you.

Sure, I'll be there. Probably all day Friday and Saturday. It's always a big show and worth the time just to meet folks and see all the goodies.

I'm sure I'll find a few bucks here and there to spend on something or other.

They have a new hotel hooked on to it with a walkway.
It's a nice center.

One is having a birthday tommorrow and he still qualifies as young (just barely).

I think the new location for the show will be a plus. I like the idea of an adult beverage dispenser or two within walking distance. I will have to be sure a schedule some additional time.

Some help please....

I've never been to a coin show, but am thinking about making this one since I am just south of Houston. What should I expect? Do the sellers have any kind of info available as to what they are selling or do you have to inquire as you go along if they have what you are looking for? I realize that coin lists would be defunct as soon as the doors open, but I am only looking for liberty halves and if anyone specializes in them I'd like to know. Do any/some/most take credit cards or should I plan to walk in with the cash I am willing to spend? Although the area around George R. Brown has expanded a lot, I don't like being in the area with cash. Except for the convention/hotel area it's not the classiest part of Houston. And finally.... are there any entry discounts for ANA/PCGS members?

2005 Houston Money Show -- Events Schedule

The area is secure for the most part, nothing like it used to be and with big money and big security wandering around you should be quite safe. Of course if you stuff a bunch of $100 bills in your belt loops and walk around in the parking lot grinnin and smilin by yourself for a while you might have some difficulties but cash is the best way to go unless you have a relationship with some of the dealers. But...get a receipt for anything you buy.

Sellers have plenty of info on the coins they have, in fact, you will just about trip over the coins on display but if you are looking for pamphlets and brochures, you're probably not going to get too many. Better to do a little research at the on line book sellers.

Discounts for ana/et.al members...no, bring money.

If you are just looking for "liberty halves" then know what you are looking for before the show. Have a few dates/mm's and grades in mind. Carrying around a bunch of books and misc. bs will prove to be very distracting unless you're buying for some other people and have to keep track of what they want. Take enough money to buy however many coins you are looking for and get the ones you are looking for but shop around because at a show like this there will be plenty of examples of just about everything and you can usually find a decent spread in what people are willing to sell for. Dont expect some dealer in a crowded show to spend half an hour with you personally unless youre spending megabuks, this isnt your local coin shop, it's an international coin show. It is always nice to have a few extra buks for that unexpected little something you might come upon. If you see something really special that you hadn't expected, put some money down on it and the dealer will set it aside and you can come back later and finish up with it.

Don't be intimidated by the show or the dealers. If you need to get your mind right, come on friday and look around, maybe snag a keeper and go home and let it all sink in then come back saturday and kick some butt. Just keep your head about you and don't get spooked. Anything you see there will probably be available again or somewhere else at another time...you don't have to buy anything, there will always be more. Oh yes...take a 5x loupe too and dont be shy about whippin it out!

Thanks for taking the time to post the detailed info about shows in general. I'll probably just go to get the idea of it and should I find something I really think is worth buying I will work from there. I'll bring my 7x Bausch & Lomb pocket packer with me just in case. I picked coin collecting up as just a hobby a couple of years ago putting together a wheat cent set(1909-1940) & mercury dimes. All circulated of course as I couldn't see putting real money into it. I just added a 1938D PCGS MS65 liberty halve to my set, so I am working my way up to the earlier halves where it will take some bargain hunting to not get clocked.
