Do you collect commem's?? Have you ever seen a Monroe that looks like this one??

I found this one during a search and can't believe it's color. I don't know that I've ever seen a Monroe with much more than a subtle rim tone of gold/brown, brilliant or the occasional soft-frosted white example. Considering that the gate on this much abused issue is usually dropped at MS63, this would appear to be an exceptional coin.
Care to weigh in with a nicely toned example of this kick-ass design that you own?? What do you think of this one??

That's really attractive. I'd love to see it in person.
this one is currently running at eBay and the seller makes mention of it being "Toned the way Monroe's usually are" in his description which is accurate. i'd say Monroe's might be one of the more abused commems because they were issued before the commemorative program was hijacked by speculators and promoters. as a result there are less Gems available and a higher number of circulated issues can be found.
the toned beauty was probably inserted into an envelope and then stuck in a folder for many years to get the impending bulls-eye tone that sets it apart from the second coin, although the second seems to have stronger luster. as both are MS64, which would you rather own, assuming they are properly graded in-hand??

I'm guess I'm more content in the long run with coins that are less spectacular upon first impression. I don't nitpick so much.
i have a Morgan with almost identical tone and the only drawback is that the luster is somewhat subdued so the coin is held back at MS62. i suspect that might be the case with this toner, also, that the tone has destroyed some/most of the original luster. the nicest Monroes i've seen are the blast white ones that appear frosty and they show up about as often as a coin like this. unfortunately for me both kinds show up when i'm tapped out!!!!
