Tough decision - Sell the 1909-s VDB or 1955 double die

I have a tough decision to make. I have my eyes set on a nice 18th century PCGS graded $5 gold coin, but I need to sell ONE of my two pennies to come up with the additional cash. The one coin is a stunning 1909-s VDB graded MS65-RB by PCGS while the other is a 1955 double die graded MS64-RB by PCGS. I don't want to sell EITHER of them image, but I don't want to let this beautiful $5 gold coin get away from me either!

So, what what would YOU do? IF you were to hold just one of these two coins for at least another 20-30 years (or longer if passed along to children), which one would you keep -- the 1909 or 1955 coin? image My thought is to stay with the 55 double die, but I believe the 1909-S VDB has appreciated more over the last 3 years than the double die. A tough choice....thanks in advance!!
Steve

Assuming both have the same eye appeal, I would keep the '55, and sell the '09-S VDB. The '55 is a tougher coin to replace.

Else, I'd keep the one with the best eye appeal.

Sell the '55. You can have a complete set without it...

Dump the 09-s vdb. That is really an easy coin to find, but you cant easily replace the double die in that grade.Look at the pops.JMHO-Lloydimage

I'd sell the '09-s VDB. It seems like a coin that is readily available if and when you decide to buy one back again.

Sell the SVDB... there are tons of those around, including many in higher grades. It is much more easily replaceable.
    When in doubt, don't.

sell the 09-S Lincoln VDB image

It's easy to replace. I just dumped all of my gold so I could buy a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. The gold can be replaced when the price drops.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
I think without viewing either of them I'd say sell the SVDB.

EASY coin to replace. An attractive 55 and a redbrown one is a tough cookie, assuming yours is attractive.

Don not make the same mistake I made. If the 55 is nice, sell the SVDB.
  • MercMerc Posts: 1,646 ✭✭
Don't sell either Lincoln. You will be sorry when either is gone. I'm sure you put some effort into finding a 1909-S VDB that you liked. You described it as stunning. Sure, there are others out there in 65 but you will have to hunt for one that you like.

You could get a loan somewhere if you really want the gold. You could also work with the seller for a payment plan.

It's not that I don't like 09S VDB, but this would be a no brainer if it were me. Keep the 55, much tougher coin to find in nice condition. But then I would never sell either one for a "gold coin".

That's what I'd say.....Svdb's are everywhere. Try to find another 64 DDO......

I'd keep both the 09-S VDB and the '55 Double Die. But if you insist on selling either, post it on the B/S/T board first. Or better yet, PM me image

Just look at the various auctions for a couple of weeks. You should see that the 1909-S VDB is available is most all grades all the time but I doubt you see many (if any) 1955 DDO cents.

I vote sell the 1909-S VDB!

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • Well compare the price appreciation of the key SLQ 1916 vs. 8/7 overdate in 20 years. Everybody said the 1916 was the

absolute best investment. WRONG. Sell the common VDB, regardless. They're really overpriced for what they are, and

the 55 is a really interesting coin. The VDB fills a hole--big deal.

  • I would sell them both and get a 09s vdb in 66RD

the reasoning that there are "lots of svdb's available" is interesting. i said dump the 55 because it's really not a natural part of the lincoln series, while the s-vdb is.

They may very well be true but its not the only reason folks collect cents or any other coinage for that matter. The coin is highly coveted among a lot of smart collectors.
  • tjkilliantjkillian Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭
Regardless of which you choose, it will be a lot easier to replace either one than a 18th century gold that could be bought in part with the proceeds of either the S-VDB or the 55.

18th Century gold is the coolest.

sell the 09. they are actually a rather common coin if what i see at shows and online is any indicator, though the 65RB grade isn't common. besides, the 55-DDO is much higher on the cool factor meter, and we all know how important that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It depends what is more inportant to you in a coin, eye appeal or rarity. If either of these coins are an investment keep the'55 and sell the VDB. I'd keep the DDO just because it is so cool.

  • Thanks for all of your comments! I don't post much to this forum but I read it quite regularly and am always impressed by the advice and craziness of its members!!! image

While I have not finalized my decision, I'm still leaning toward selling the 09s-vdb. I think the "eye appeal" of the SVDB is better than the 55DD, but I think the "coolness" and rarity of the 55DD offsets that. As many have noted, it IS tough to find a 64RB DDO, though I also spent several years finding what I think is a high-quality 65RB sVDB. The SVDB is close to RED, but I have not sent it in to PCGS to regrade as a number of dealers told me "not to waste my time and money" at a recent coin show since upgrades from PCGS are "next to impossible" to get.

I tried uploading both obverses of both coins, but I received a message saying the file was too large -- dang! Any thoughts as to how I can easily post pics of both of these coins? I do NOT have a website (hard to believe).

Hoping to buy my 2nd 18th century gold coin soon.... image

Sell the 09-S VDB. Those are over-priced due to the hype of "it" being the "holy grail" of coins. The 55 should retain its value more.
  • Definately sell the 09S-VDB. You can replace it much easier.

    Steve,

If I were you, I'd let the SVDB go. It is much more common than the 55-DDO, and should be an easy coin to find a replacement for. Now paying for it is another matter.

I would keep the 55, just beucase I think its one of the coolest lincolns out there. Most lincoln collectors have a 09 vdbs, but few can say they have a NICe 55

Do not sell a 55 in that grade Period.

If the 55 DDO is a nice red/brown, I would definitely keep it. Much tougher to find than the 09-s vdb which is availbale in just about every grade any day.

As far as future price appreciation, the 55DDo will out perform the 09-s vdb in years to come IMO. Even though the 09-s vdb has had some strong price gains in the past few years, it will begin to soften as they are overpriced in most grades including your 65RB currently.
