    MS66

  • MS65, the mark in the field hurts, the shoulder and face are 66 qual, may go 66 depending on how bright the coin is.

I'm going to go MS64+ on it. It wouldnt suprise me if it went 65. I dont think it's 66. Here's a MS65. I must admit that I've sent it in twice looking for 66, though. Rella has a 66 that you can compair it to. Although, I'll certainly admit... it's nearly impossible to accurately compair coins taken from different cameras.

  • I like this one as a 66, if it has great luster! image

The jaw and lapel look clean, as does Monticello. Nice coin!

Sorry to say this, but it really depends on the mood of the grader at the time you submit it and, of course, the grading company you submit it to.

I've seen other coins very similar to this one in a PCGS 66 holder... but IMHO, it's probably a 65 coin. It doesn't appear like pilar 3 is struck very well (may just be the picture), the tic on the forehead and chatter in the field limits my grade, but I still like the coin. Too bad it doesn't have full steps... those things anotated with a Type 2 reverse have been selling well.

I also like the picture... wish I could get something close to that from my Mavica. What in the world is an OTT light and where do I find them?

  • I'd say 64 - shot 65: weakness in the center of Monticello (esp. the third pillar), as someone else noted above. Hope you get the 65!

Gotta agree with Coppernicus, MS64. The top of the jaw and the center of the building are not struck well on a date that can come extremely well struck. Steps of 1940 but not close to full steps. If it were mine I'd keep it inthe album.

If the mark in the left obverse field is really there like that then 64/5 liner for me. I would need to see it...

MS64 Reverse of 1940 with some weakness of strike evident on both sides of the coin. you can see it in the flatness of the ear/hair detail on the obverse and the central weakness and abscence of detail of the Monticello on the reverse. remember, these were brand spankin' new dies with stronger reverse detail at the steps and central pillar area. add to that the fact that the Denver Mint struck the best coins through the early years of the series as noted by the frequency of Full Step coins, so the detail on a nice '39-D should be crisp for it to grade MS65-66.
