New Purchase: 1878-S PCGS MS-65 PL Morgan Dollar -- Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
There's an exception to every rule, and here's one for me. Most of my fellow forum members know that I typically stay away from MS-65 (and higher) grade coins, and have a personal preference for the beauty and reasonable cost of the MS-64 PL Morgans.

Well here's a really pretty looking 1878-S in MS-65 that I could not refuse. I have always had a preference for 1878 dated Morgans, as well as Carson City minted issues.

I know that the 1878-S Morgan is tough to find in PCGS MS-65 PL and higher grade. This one was just recently graded by PCGS (new large hologram label on reverse) and is described by the seller (whom I have purchased from before) as nearly DMPL. Check out the prices for the 1878-S in MS-65 DMPL (16x PL price) for reference...

Here are the original seller's photos for your viewing pleasure:

That is one heck of a coin Stuart, great score. I look forward to see your pictures of it when you get it in hand.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • In many cases a PL Morgan can be much prettier than a DMPL, and this is the case here. Unfortunately it also seems the marketplace is slowly waking up to this idea, if you've watched some auctions recently. Very nice example. image

Thanks to all of you for the kind words and positive comments about my new 1878-S PCGS MS-65 Prooflike Morgan.

I am really looking forward to receiving her, and examining her in person, as well as taking some higher resolution photos to share with my fellow forum members.

I am assuming that she is conservatively graded with very nice mirrors since this coin was recenty submitted, and is in one of the new PCGS slabs with the large silver hologram label on the reverse.

I'll update this thread when I receive the coin.

Gorgeous coin Stuart. I agree with the sentiment that PL is actually more pleasing to the eye than DMPL.

    Smoooooth....

    I like it.

And, I agree with the 64 PL prices being more reasonable than 65... I too look for a good deal in that same manner.
    Nice work on the 65!!

Gorgeous! I love it. image So, that pic isn't from your new Panasonic right? Still haven't got the lighting right with mine. Makes all my coins look,... I don't know... dirty.
