Okay...I am an amateur collector, dthigpen, you and I have communicated in email before, and lately I've been checking things out on Ebay, just to see what's out there. I don't have anything great, as a matter of fact I think my oldest coin is a 1919 wheatie. To the point, I came across this auction today and was wondering about it.

Now, I am not expecting to really get anything spectacular, but just to get my hands on some neat coins that I don't have. Decent investment or would I be a fool?

I am the rare breed of "nerds", a really cute girl that collects Star Wars stuff and coins!

Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
While many people are against the idea of 'mixed lots' (Primarily seasoned collectors), I admit that I often purchase them myself to give to younger relatives and new collectors, and have in fact purchased from this dealer 2 or 3 times with very positive results for these purposes. It's a good way for a fledgling collector to get a good mix of coins to research and start off their collection, and will give you an idea of what type of coins draw you in the most. As long as you don't have expectations of finding key date coins or super high grade 19th century coins, you can't really go wrong.

Honestly, this is a rip-off... most of the time in these type of auctions, the coins you get, will be worth maybe half of what you paid for them, if that... if you're looking to pick up different types of coins real cheap, just to have more variety... your local coin dealers junk bin is a great place to look I remember getting a really really beat-up Seated Liberty Dime when I first started collecting out of a dealer junk bin for just a few dollars back when I first started collecting. Was thrilled with it!! But most of what they are offering, you can get realy cheap by outright buying them from a dealer, or even from someone of the forums

You will get a lot of "don't DO IT!" to the listed auction.
I agree with that, to a degree.
To be totally upfront, I did buy a lot like this when I first wanted to get back into coin collecting. I got a slight assortment (mostly '40s and '50s wheat cents). I did get an 1880-O morgan dollar in ~Fine condition. That sparked me on some morgan collecting.
So, it was a spark for me. Was it worth it? Yes. Was it worth it from an "investment" or "financial" standpoint, absolutely not.
There will be a lot of junk coins and maybe some that are ok. I don't think there is anything really worth it. It is like treasure hunting...be prepared to do a lot of digging through the dirt.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

And yeah all the veterans, my wife buys that argument when I spend $ 900 on a roll of Morgans.
Have fun collecting

Good Q! I have PM'ed several times re: GTG threads, and he has not replied. I hope he is okay. Maybe he found a woman.
The guys can be a little rough at times, but you will get excellent advise.
