Yep. A Regency slab. I've only seen one.

And that $20 is conservatively graded, too. image

That would be correct. Gold sure looks cool in those!

  • That's what Heritage calls the now discontinued prestige slab, although Cammy said it has a different name. Apparently the owner could have what he wanted put on it as a identifier. The Dr. Huffnagle Collection (HERITAGE) has a Morgan 1892CC (DPML?) in one that says "possible proof" even though there's no record of CC Branch Mint Proofs (except 1893CC), there. Expensive opinion huh?

No, T.T.- I see what you mean. It does look like it has some rub, but I don't think it's a slider. I've owned PCGS 63's that looked worse.

  • Earlier Double Eagles are a bit harder to grade. This one is a 61+, IMO.

I guess I should have clarified!

I *know* it's a regency slab...the thing that puzzles me is why the price is so far out of line! It's incredibly overpriced, unless you like paying extra for the fancy slab!

Cool slab, but why did someone pay a premium many years ago to slab a "so so" hunk of gold????image

A regular slab seems plenty good enough for that coin?? Am I missing something???

Those slabs are extremely hard to find and do command a premium. From what I've seen, they're only second to the black NGC slabs, which almost never appear.

Also this 1878 $20 has a bit of doubling on its reverse which does add a bit of value to the coin.

Something must be up, that lot is gone now.

I had put in a bid for that 1878 DDR $20 Liberty on Saturday and was hoping no one else would discover it.

My "make an offer" bid to Heritage was successful.

It is sort of a triple play for me.

One=== a DDR coin. Neat to have.
Two=== a Regency holder. Goes well in the gold coins.
Three==a sleepy "forgotten" date. A bit pricey here only because it is in this holder.
Four===I needed the date/mm for my set anyway!

I also think that was a cool pickup... can you post a pic of the reverse doubling?

Thank you for the kind thoughts. I find that I am getting more and more eccentric in my purchasing of numismainia stuff.

Not that I was normal to begin with!!!! image
