POLL: Guess the Grade - Two Arkansas Commems (Grade Posted)

These two very different looking 1938-S Arkansas Commems reside in NGC Slabs and are graded the same. Although the lighting and image equipment are different I do believe both pictures fairly represent the coins. Comments welcome.

  • Top one looks cleaned. Bottom one my guess would be AU58 but I am not good at grading commems. just curious how close I'd be if you know the grades.image

Interesting spit in opinions so far.

BTW, the scratches on the cheek and nose of #1 are on the slab, not the coin.

When guessing your grade which coin are you keying on? Do you think they are both fairly graded? or is one quite a bit higher in grade than the other?

I guessed MS64. Nice toning on the second one!

MS 63. The lower coin exhibits a better strike on the reverse than the typical flat strike. Additionally the upper coin appears to have the criss-cross scratches on the cheek. The lower coin may have better eye appeal.

I guessed the "I don't have a clue" option. Not because I've never seen an Arkansas commem, but because I'd have a tough time with 'em.

Like Peace dollars, I have a tough time distinguishing strike from rub on those.

    My WAG? 63.

    I really don't have much of a clue, so I should have selected that...but I didn't -- I took a WAG anyway.

    I guessed 63.
