  • Nice piece - but you can bet your bottom dollar that if it was anywhere close to MS68, that bad girl would be in a proper slab.

    That's a nice looking SLQ, I doubt it's a 68. I wonder what it's doing in an NTC slab?

So, so strike, but it has a nice "look." Really, I like it, but not as a 68....I could see it as a PCGS 66, wonder whether it will sell for more as a NTC 68 than it would as a PCGS 66??????????????????????

The strike is terrible and it should not grade higher than MS64. The central shield is completely flat and the outer rim is missing several rivets due to the flat strike. The good things about it are that it has nice luster and apperas uncirculated. Here is a good strike on a 1929-S. Sorry, my picture is a bit washed out and doesn't show the shield details, but shows the head well. The ultimate SLQ has a full head, full shield rivets, and full toes on Miss Liberty. That is a tough coin to find.

  • I wouldn't call it a terrible strike myself, but it's certainly not good enough to really make it into any reputable 68 holder. 68 should be just about fully struck, and as Merc pointed out, there's just too much weakness to the strike on this coin.

I will add my opinion on grade, and I agree with Merc here as well, but not for strike weakness. Because of the dig on center of the shield and the dig on her shin, that keeps this one out of gem. And they don't look like "ticks." They look like substantial hits.

The folks at NTC are very generous with the grade on this coin. Its a terrible strike on the centrals and at the head, but its a gem none the less. I have to agree with David, because of the major hit on the shield and on the shin, the best I'd give it would be a 65.

Merc's example is very nice especially at the head, but again, the centrals are a tad weak, which is the case of most SLQ's regardless of MS grade.

I have only bought one NTC graded coin, it was a 1926-S SLQ, graded MS 63, and it has an amazing strike - not full head, but very very close - and because I noticed the rub on Liberty's forward leg, I advised the dealer ( on the bourse floor at a show in Clearwater, FL ) that the coin was a choice AU 58 and no better. We agreed on a price inbetween what a choice AU & MS 63 coin would sell for. I have since cracked this coin out and it now resides in my raw Dansco ablum.

I wouldn't touch this coin with a 10 foot pole. It looks cleaned to me. It might just be the photo, but the shield looks too shiny like it's been polished. Also weak strike. There are nicer ones available.

Yes, there is a chance it has hairlines everywhere but if NOT the coin is pretty nice an probably worth 64+ to 65 money....based on the picture that is.

As far as the grade on the holder is concerned that is irrelevant...if I were to bid I'd treat it as a raw coin. No more no less.

MS 68; minha bunda! You can't see half of the coin because the image is too dark. Bet there are plenty of scratches in these areas of the coin, especially on Miss Liberty's legs, similar to the eagle's wings on the reverse.

Bet there is rub on her rt. leg. The strike is mediocre at best, and I am suspicious of what appear to be small scratches / digs on the flat area of Miss Liberty's head and shield. Could be telltale signs of a cleaning. Nice looking luster on the coin, but with that image, you really can't look for luster breaks.

It might go MS 63 or MS 64; too many contact marks for a 5 IMO. Wouldn't go near it, myself.
