I believe without the tic on the front leg this could be a 66. I voted 65 though.

Nice coin .. . nice toning.

I voted 63 because of the moderate severity of the tick on the leg. Otherwise, I'd have had no problem guessing 65 or 66.

Not being a commem collector, I've realized from Baley's two posts that it's pretty much impossible to grade a coin when you don't know what a good strike should look like. image

    Voted 65......for what it's worth.

Great luster and color. I say a very nice MS-64.

That hit on the leg sure does distract, however, this image is blown up. I see some very nice luster on this one, and aside from the hit on the leg it sure seems GEM to my eyes.....

    I'm calling it atleast a ms65....

    I went 66. It's a great looking coin.

My first thought was 65, but in hand I feel the color and
the luster might just bring a 66.
So many of these have a lot of contact marks on the bear.

I feel the rev. might just swing the grade too.
It's hard to see contact marks from a straight on shot on this issue.
At an angle it might look different.

    I love the coin.

  • Let's see, the next one should be a San Diego, then a California. Then you'll have the complete row in my type set.

    I vote 64.

    I voted MS66 for 3 reasons:

    1. Incredibly bold strike. You can see every ripple in the water !
    2. Gorgous natural toning, eye appeal
    3. You said you bought it for yourself to celebrate winter. How better to do that than with a 66 ?

Thanks for your votes and comments everyone,
The voting is pretty close on this one, although I am always surprised that only 30 or so members participate in one of these polls. I thought there were more of us?
Anyway, I'll let it run a few more minutes while I photograph the slab and then will reveal NGC's grade

I can't grade a coin let alone from a photo, having said that it looks 66 but I voted 67. Hits like that don't bother me much.

It'll end up being a very nice 63. They are EXTREMELY tough on the bear.

    Cheers,

Lots of folks mentioning "the hit on the leg" and yes, of course it's there.
It's also the only naked-eye-visible hit on the entire coin
if this were a walker or a frankie, the coin would grade MS67+, easily
Of course, commems are graded a little tougher; they didn't get bagged, rolled, or circulated the way business-strike coins did.

That's a fairly large hit on the Bears foreleg, but a beautiful coin none the less. MS64.

Real nice bell curve on this poll, your opinions centered right around NGC's grade:

    image

congrats to those who said MS65!

those who said MS64 and MS63: Sell me your coins!

those who said MS66 and MS67: Wanna buy a coin?

    thanks for playing

So thats a 64 at PCGS?

there is no doubt in my mind that this coin would "cross" at 65 at pcgs.

However, would it be better to have it in a "new" pcgs holder, or an OLD ngc holder? image

(those who know me, know it's staying put)
