Look at the fake Seated Dollars, Trade Dollars, 8 Reales and Pesos this guy is pushing. Some have sold for hundreds of dollars. Buyers are going to be upset. Thanks in advance to whoever provides a link.

If you are going to deal outside of the US you should know what your buying and accept the risk of loss- not only from counterfiets but from people that will just flat out keep your money. Not much recourse against people like this. mike

Usually they appear rough and grainy, and they have a general lack of detail that you'd find with original coins.

One common method of counterfeiting is through "die transfer". A genuine coin is used to create impressions that become dies for the fake coins. Invariably, some amount of detail is lost in this transfer process. And more often than not, these cast forgeries often have that dull, grainy appearance. If you had the coin in hand, you could notice other things, like the coin being underweight (these are almost always considerably underweight), and that tapping the coin doesn't produce a bell-like sound that tapping the edge of a genuine coin would produce.
  • Wow, what an incredible amount of effort for such a small return. You have to wonder about the motivation.

The seller probably did not make these fakes. I first saw them about 6 or 7 years ago. You could buy them in quantity for about 4 or 5 dollars each. Now, they are probably available for less. The return is significant. The motivation is greed.

If you can sell hundreds or even thousands at just $5 to $10 each, the motivation adds up.

And you have to remember these fakes are coming from China or other southeast Asia where annual income is probably not more than a thousand or two a year. It doesn't take too many sales to make a comfortable living. And the people who then resell them to suckers make a good income as well.

The single negative feedback is in French. Ebay should be translating feedbacks to English for us. That's the least an American company should be doing for its mostly American customers.
