New Morgan arrival - Guess the grade (Grade Posted)

Just got this today in the mail. As is typical, the reverse is much cleaner than the obverse in terms of marks.

MS-63 PL (Hard to judge reflectivity of fields -- could be DMPL).

    I assume that it's an 1884-CC.

62PL providing the reverse has equal PL characteristics.

  • I see a 63 with a possible dm, lot of hits in the field, looks like some rub in the hairline- is that orangy spot from camera or in the cheel itself?

    What about the reverse?

That spot is a cardboard speck on the outside of the holder, that I have since brushed off. Let me see about a reverse photo.

a decent picture which looks to be the size of a dinner plate on my screen. Keep in mind that small surface imperfections on the cheek and hair are typical for a CC dollar. I like the fact that no one has tried to thumb this coin. This coin will grade higher than what most have said.

it seems like they got it right numerically and the PL/DMPL seems mostly based on the reverse which shows mirrors a little bit cloudy. i'm still learning about the "O Mint" coins and the die basining, but the eagle seems well struck. are they graded differently than the other issues because of that?

Al, each date/mint Morgan has it's own grading characteristics due to the huge variance in striking quality from the five mints that struck them. On this date, the average strike is a little weak, though pretty well struck coins such as this one exist in enough numbers that they aren't hard to find. This coin is very nice for a 63PL and does dispaly some light cameo. I got this coin fairly cheap and it will go into my permanent Morgan stash.
