Steinbrenner owes 25 million luxury tax

The Yankees owe a 25 million dollar luxury tax for their 203 million dollar payroll of 2004.

The Red Sox owe a 3 million dollar tax for their 134.5 million dollar payroll.

The only other team was Anaheim with a tax of 900,000 dollars.

Last years biggest spenders...

Yankees
Red Sox
Angels
Mets
Dodgers
Cubs
Phillies
Cardinals

I guess the Cardinals did very well with the money they spent.
I guess the Mets did the worst with the money they spent.

  • yankees spend too much and then 25 million extra because of it = nothing to show for it. but the red sox spend a hell of a lot less and only 3 million extra = world series! i would say the steinbrenner is having a coronary right now for having to write a check for all that cash for absolutely nothing. and needing to spend even more to try and win a world series next year. image

more brilliant insight from the Yankee bashers!

I guess ya'll are into that new math that has redefined "nothing"

New York also estimates it will give up about $60 million as part of baseball's revenue-sharing plan this season, meaning the Yankees will send the Commissioner's office about $85 million of their estimated $315 million revenue in 2004. Boston's revenue-sharing payment is estimated at approximately $42 million on revenue of at least $220 million.

  • They should have to pay or they can't play this year. Sounds fair to me.
  • Sounds like a fitting conclusion to a "great" season. image

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I'd say they did the best spending of anyone. 3 million is chump change for a championship.

.....would you rather have a salary of 315 mil and pay 85 mil in taxes

or.....a salary of 220 mil and pay 45 mil in taxes ??

As much as I despise the yankees and their hoarding of players, they are (a) playing by the rules that ALL owners signed off on and (b) are at least spending money. How many of these rich owners are pocketing millions while they leave a subpar product on the field?

funny, especially the Steinbrenner picture incident.
  • I think the best spending EVER is when the Marlins had a 45 million payroll in 2003 an beat the mighty 200 million juggernaut Yankees.

That must be a world record in sports.
