Trade Dollars from Hong Kong, a new twist?

I am used to seeing fake trade Dollars on eBay from sellers out of the Far East but this auction might be a new twist on things. Here is one in a PCGS holder!

Heh, not everyone in Asia selling coins is a scammer image
  • Trade Dollars were used for trade with foreign countries ya know. So it makes sense that foreign countries would have them. Or else the PCGS slab is fake? image

3 day listing, starting price of $200, graded 64, brand new seller from Hong Kong. It has all the hallmarks of a good deal to me.image

    I wonder if therealcoinguy1 is our coinguy1?
  • The Cert Number checked out as an 1874-S Trade Dollar but who the heck knows if he really has the slab. And he's not doing himself any favors taking checks and money orders. Weird....

He's not very smart. He stold the 1895 from a current action: 1895 proof
    Becky
  • He's also got a nice alt-id watermarked on his pictures of the proof morgan. xanadu5000.

xanadu5000 is an ebay id having 0 feedback.

"chinaolympiad_168" is a scam artist who lists coins for sale which belong to others. It appears that his previous Ebay ID was "xanadu_5000", who had the same MO and who was exposed for being a scammer.

One of the things that allowed me to make the connection was the fact that for "chinaolympiad_168", when I clicked on "properties" of some of his images, it showed "xanadu5000" - see bottom right hand corner of slab below:

I have a feeling he will be receiving some more negatives soon.image

I feel bad for the legitimate ones, but there are very few Asian sellers I'll deal with. Even when they aren't selling fake coins, they are often selling someone else's coins. Having said that, there are a couple of sellers in Hong Kong I've seen who appear to be very legit. I have to imagine it must be tough for them to get fair prices for their coins because so many buyers would avoid them strictly because of the reputation of their location.

I don't think the seller will be getting paid anytime soon!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Hmmmm the high bidder on this one is "imascamartist" imageLink

Ooops. imascamartist has been removed as a bidder? Where's scumnuker when you need him?

Everyone, please report this guy to Ebay or bid liberally on his remaining offerings. image A forum member has "won" two of his coins but can't stop him by himself.
  • DorkGirlDorkGirl Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭
I reported him yesterday. I also emailed 7 dealers that he had stolen their pictures and asked them to report him too. So far 5 have contacted me about reporting him. I'm surprized that he hasn't cancelled your bids yet Mark, but if he does I'll step up and bid on the coins. He cancelled "imascamartist"s bids because "The buyer is mean." image

How is this guy still able to be selling????
  • coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
Smittys, SO FAR, no one has gotten stuck and then reported him to Ebay.

However, he has been reported to Ebay by some forum members.

The bidders who have "won" his auctions have either known he was a scammer and have no intention of sending him money, or (in the cases of those who didn't know better) have been warned.image
  • DorkGirlDorkGirl Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭
Well now, that would be me that won three of his auctions today. And I have to tell you there are a lot of nice people emailing me and telling me not to send him any payment. image But you all can stop now, I got the point!!image I'm not going to leave any feedback until after the next round of auctions so he won't cancel my bids like he did Mark's.

Which brings up the question---can I report him to eBay again now that I have "won" his auctions? Or will they consider it some kind of fraud or harassment?

DorkGirl, you can certainly report him again - after all, you're telling the truth about a scammer.

    PS - PM sent.

A special thanks goes to DorkGirl - with her conscientiousness, energy and hard work, the guy never really had a chance.image

We also received a great deal of help from an Ebay'er, who, after initially being skeptical of my warning, really sunk his teeth into stopping the scammer. The Ebay'er was eventually referred to the this tread and might join the forum soon, too.

Thanks also, to anyone who reported the guy and/or gave him a tough time.

Ah shucks, thanks Markimage, and I too want to give a special thanks to our eBay friend, he's a very nice person and I hope he will join us here soon!! And of course, Mark once again took the hit on his feedback to warn others of this scammer, that's tough for anyone to do!!

I want to add that we only usually talk about the bad things that happen eBay. But I have to tell you, there are a lot of good people there too. I got at least 20 emails from concerned fellow eBayers telling me not to pay this jerk (like that was going to happenimage)

What a wonderful way to start out the new yearimage

    Happy New Year!!
