What are your collecting goals for 2005?

I TTT'ed the 2004 goals long thread, but what are everyone's goals for 2005?

Mine are:

  • My realistic goals for 2005 are:

    1) Finish my 1958 Topps Football set in PSA 7 & 8.

    2) Get my 1953 Bowman Football set over 60% complete in PSA 7 & 8.

Focus, focus, focus! My sig line is only part of what I collect; I'm too scattershot. I sell off chunks of my collection, but then I get seduced by something else. I need focus and discipline.

Crap, I have to have goals? image

Seriously, my problem is like so many others; staying focused on what I have already started. It will save me time, frustration, and a lot of money. However, it may not be as much fun! image

Focus - absolutely! There is no way to realistically complete all of the sets I am working on, but if I narrow it down to a half dozen or so, there is hope. But, as mentioned, it may not be as much fun that way.

  • Buy less, take my Ralston Purina set over to SGC, since PSA won't grade them anymore

#1 My goal last year was to finish my 1934 batter up set in all graded form. Well I did this back in August, however this set is still not at its completed level. I would like to move all my PSA 3/4s to a higher grade of PSA 5 or above. I know it sounds easy, but it is very difficult.
#2 Add three PSA 8's to my 1971 Topps Greatest Moments set.
    #3 Start a 1940's set and a 1960's set
#4 Pick up a nice 1954 Wilson Weiners Ted Williams (psa 5/6/7)

    That is it.
    1954
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • My goals are the same as a lot of you, focus, focus, focus. In the past year I have started and sold two vintage sets. A 25% complete psa 8 1969 topps baseball set and a 20% psa 7 1954 topps set. I loved collecting both sets very much but with the new house it probably was not a smart decision.

    My goals are this:

Get to a minimum of 85% in my Fisk Basic set in PSA 10.

Slowly hide card funds from wife so I can make a jump into something different at the end of the year. image

Find and Submit my own Fisk psa 10's. Most of what I need are late 80's and 90's, this should be a relatively easy task. ("If I just take the time to do it")

    Have fun!

    Thanks,

    Glen
  • Get the rest of my '55 topps set sent in to reach 100% graded form.
Send in my '55 Bowman set for grading, not sure to complete or sell and do a '63 fleer, '59 fleer, or a diffrent set under 200 cards. Any suguesstions?

  • #1 Complete my Philly football sets
#2 Complete my 71 Baseball set (I need 15 cards in either PSA 7 or 8)
    #3 Complete All-Time Defense set
    #4 Pick up a C. Joiner, J. Riggins, T. Hendricks, M. Haynes, L. Roy Selmon and L. Csonka RC's in PSA 9
#5 Pick an 89 Score Football J. Taylor in PSA 10. Than my 89 Score set would be complete in all PSA 10.
Baseball is my Pastime, Football is my Passion
  • 1. Complete my T201 set (4 cards, including Cobb)
    2. Buy more Schmidt junk, but, in particular, a '73 OPC
    3. Upgrade a raw '74 Topps set
    4. Complete a raw '75 Topps mini set (not yet started)
    5. Decide whether to start another small, pre-war graded set
  • 1. Complete my basic set and add 10 psa 10's new cards or upgrades AND add 10 cards to the basic set uping the total.
    2. Add 50 cards to my master set
    3. FIND a mint Desert Shield
    4. Add a press plate 1/1
    5. Aquire 3000 more raw cards

    Boggs,
I understand that those Desert Storm cards a really tough to find in mint shape. If you find a source, let me know - I need the Trammell regular and All Star cards from that set.

  • Ive done a lot since ive come back to the hobby a few months ago. I now have focus and realize the limitations in my budget. So, here are my plans for the year:

1.) Complete all rookie cards for modern players who have 500 home runs or 300 wins. Staying away from vintage on this set since the remaining cards are very expensive (mathews, mantle)

2.) Start up on 64 Topps Standups, 1910 Tip Top Bread and 1954 Red Man Tobacco

3.) Get a Johnstons Cookies 1954 Hank Aaron

4.) Depending on my budget later in the year, start up on the 3,000 hit club collection.

Money will be a lot scarce this coming year, so i have to hold my pursuit of other collections i have begun or will try to build.
  • 1. Complete and upgrade my Nolan Ryan basic set.

    2. Find a 1987-88 Fleer Sticker #11 Alex English in PSA 9 (to complete my set in all PSA 9's) and make an attempt at any 10's from the set that might appear.

    3. Get my 93 Finest refractor set to over 75% graded (a set I just started, but already have over 25% raw).

    4. Find more Dock Ellis PSA 9's and 10's that I don't have.

    5. Toward the end of 2005, start a '73 Topps set in PSA 9 (with a goal of completing it in 3 to 4 years).
  • Well no one has said much about hockey so.........

    1. Complete my 1971-72 OPC in PSA 8 or better. I am 75% of the way there

    2. Complete the 1985-86 OPC in 8 or better and slowly upgrading to 9 or Better. I am 92% at 8 or better right now.

    3. Complete the 1980-81 OPC PSA 8 or better at 52% right now

    4. 1990 OPC Premier, on card away and I am not paying $100 bucks for that dang Keith Premieu card!!!!!!!!!!

    5. look for any other PSA 9 cards from either 1979, 81 or 86 OPC Sets and slowly build these up.

    6. Win the lotto to pay for all the grading I need to get done before my wife kills me.

Cheers and Happy New Year and Good Luck in your golas of 2005.

    Darren

  • I find myself to be like almost everyone else here, I can never decide where to spend my money (there isn't a lot there I'm only 17), and end up starting a bunch of different sets with no realistic chance of ever completing them. Anyway, I tried to make a reasonable list of goals for 2005 which I will try to follow throughout the year.

    1. Complete my Kareem Abdul Jabbar Basic Set (Currently 70%) in PSA 8-10 except RC in 7
    2. Get Kareem Abdul Jabbar Master Set to 75%
    3. 1970-71 Topps Basketball set to 50% (PSA 8-9)
    4. Acquire a 1970 Pete Maravich RC in PSA 8
    5. Get Barry Sanders Basic Set to 50% (Currently 5% just started 2 weeks ago) in PSA 9-10
    6. Complete Bob Lanier Basic Set in PSA 8-10 (Currently only 9%)
    7. Get Rick Barry Master Set to 50% in PSA 8-10 (Currently 7%)
    8. Reach 25% on my All-Time Rushers Set (Currently 10%)
    9. Acquire a nice looking Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente each in PSA 5-6
    10. Start a 1961-62 Fleer Basketball Set in PSA 7-8 and get to 20%

    Collecting:

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar PSA 7-10 12/17 70.59%
    Barry Sanders PSA 9-10
Any graded PSA basketball stars Pre-1980
  • I agree with the focus, focus, focus theme so I'm sticking to these five goals:

    1. Pick up the last two PSA 8's I need to complete my 1971 Topps BB set in 8 or better
    2. Upping my completion % on my 1975 Mini set to 50% by picking up 9's at reasonable prices. Currently @ 33%.
    3. Completing my raw Bowman Chrome BB sets. 1997 - 2000 complete, need about 10 in 2001, 2 in 2002 and 1 in 2003.
    4. Completing a raw 1975 Mini set - need about 150 cards
    5. Begin my Dan Marino player master set quest - my first submission was just sent in to PSA.

Happy New Year and hopefully we can all achieve our goals!

    Steve
  • Nice thread.

Let's see in no particular order:
    1. Send in to PSA every Topps Mantle I have regardless of condition
    2. Finally go thru the 2 or 3 thousand 1966's and see if I actually have a complete set
    3. (I was out of action for about six months so) go thru all the 1967's and see how many complete
    sets I actually have

    a) it's probably close to 2 complete in graded form. .Is it worth reporting a 2nd set to the registry?
    b) see how many near-complete sets I have, and decide if I want to pay $50 for an EX Demeter just
to complete another ungraded set, or just get up on ebay with some "near-complete sets" in varying conditions

(or be the 1967 version of Henderson "king of the commons but all from the same year" with few auctions but
    start an ebay store instead)

    4. Send in all those pre-Topps era cards for grading, again regardless of condition just to have
a better measure of what I've got (not too many)

    5. Have everything in good enough order that the ex-guest room can become a guest room again.
    ebay:1967topps
1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • Well as an avid Hockey collector, I would like to complete the world's best 71/72 OPC NHL (my favorite set) by either getting the remaining PSA 9's I need and getting a tonne of my stuff graded by PSA..........I have 4 sets of this year.......it is truly a classic.......

Also, I would like to start working on some of the 50's Hockey cards......perhaps starting with Rookie cards only........I have my eye on a Jean Believeau PSA 8 but it is a fortune.......

Also I would to finish my 68/69 OPC High grade set........

But more then anything, I would love to learn to be more patient when collecting and too pay off my Credit Card
debt so I can rack them up again.........har har........

  • Hey Devon, how close are you on the 1971 Set? I have sold a few singles to you on ebay and have been beaten by you too. I am Newbie66 on Ebay. I know you have a hell of a set ther. If you ever want to sell some that will grade 8 or better or have some 8's that you do not need let me know.

    Cheers,
    Darren

Continue on my 1972 Football in PSA 8. I am about 30% through with 50% of the high series complete. I've got the top cards already, (Namath, Staubach, Spurrier) so finding the commons and minor stars is tough. Everyone and their mother sells them for $8.00 so if money was no object I'd have it done but I am trying to be frugal

I want to add another 3000-4000 different Packer Cards to my collection. I currently have about 12,000 different Green Bay Packer cards dating from 1957-2004.

Finally going through the three vending cases of 1985 Topps football and finding my PSA 10 starter set.

If anyone has large lots of Packer Cards or PSA 8 1972 Topps commons please email me ebayfortroy@hotmail.com

This is a great thread. My goals are:

    1. Attain 75%+ completion on my Marino basic set - I'm currently at 31%
    2. Attain 30 to 40% completion on my Marino master set - I'm currently around 10 or 11% (there are a lot of cards in the master set!!)
    3. Attain 75%+ completion on my 1959 Topps FB set in PSA 8 or above. I'm currently around 41% w/ an avg. of 7.97%
    4. Buy at least one PSA 8 graded card from every major football set from 1935 to 1989. I currently have over 1/2 the sets started on the registry but I'd like to get the other sets started. My overall goal is to have complete sets in PSA 7 or 8 of every major football set (that shouldn't be too difficult if I win the Power Ball....image
    5. Attain at least 25% completion on the all time rushers/receivers/QB/defense sets. I have a lot of the cards, I just need to enter them.

And of course, my main goal is for my wife and I to adopt our first kid in 2005 (which may drain some of my card money...lol..)

  • Wow, some of you guys are absolutely nuts! I'm too afraid og the guy whose wife throws the frying pan - my wife will run me over with the jeep, bbut here goes:

    1. work on my raw 1941 play ball set - then get it graded
    2. get my Emmitt Smith master collection (over 800 cards) to over 10% I'm at less than 1% right now
    3. work on my 1969 raw/graded set - I started this in 1985 with the Roy Face card - still not done always looking for lots of 69's

Thanks guys and by the way - a lot of these posts have been really informative and funny (the four sharp corners christamas card post)

    Thanks

Novocent - I have a 53 T Podres I'm on the fence on whether to get rid of it and not sure if it good enough for your set but if you are interested e-mail me at krunchtyme@ec.rr.com

50% on Nolan Ryan Master set, and acquire either a Deckle, a Comic, a Pin Up, an 85 Mini, or a 93 Refractor.

    Not start any new sets

    Collect/earn a gold bar That's about it.
  • I have two goals.......

My first goal is to buy Siegel's T-206 Honus Wagner

My second goal is to acquire Fogel's, Branca's, Merkle's and Louchios' registry collections and consolidate them.

Oh that's my dream not reality.

My first goal is to start another high grade set.

My second goal is to finish the set I'm currently working on.

Buying 1957 Baseball PSA 8 or higher. Especially Checklists, and Contest Cards. Topps1957psa8set@aol.com
  • My 2005 collecting goals are as follows:

    1. Complete my 1976-77 basketball set. It's at 95% now and I have a raw one to draw the rest of the cards from, so this is a realistic goal.
    2. Achieve 50% for my 1970-71 basketball set. I plan on converting the major stars from a raw set to aid in completing this goal.
    3. Achieve 40% to 50% for my 1978 football set. This one is more of a stretch, but it's possible.
    3. Work on increasing the percentages of the other sets I have registered
    4. Consider starting another registed set or two.
    5. Improve the rating on my 1969-70 basketball set.

That should keep me plenty busy for the coming year!
  • Happy New Year!

    1. Complete the 1978 Topps BB set in PSA 9 before the end of the year. This will be simple if I don't start any new sets.

    2. No more new sets this year. See #1.

    3. Get back to the 1956 BB set once #1 is complete.

Later this month I get off of mobilization after 2 years being stuck at Fort Dix. I should have some more time to submit some cards (yeah right).

    Good luck to all.

    1. Pick up any Bobby Jones cards I don't already have (with affordability in mind)
    2. Finish Grading my 1900 Copes Golfers set
    3. Start a Jack Nicklaus Registry
    4. Attend my first National
    5. Buy a round of golf with Tiger Woods with my lotter ticket winnings...(Hey you said this is a goal list right, might as well add one totally unreachable - impossible goal)

    Happy New Year to All!

  • 1. Get my player sets finished and start some new ones (I'm going to do sets of post-war lead-off hitters and catching poses).
    2. Keep plugging away at the '77s. I hope to hit the 700 upgrades mark this year. It will take three upgrades a month--not realistic, but who knows.
    3. Buy a new home and still keep my hobby afloat.
    4. Try to find something I like that "redsoxjeff" doesn't. Whatever that thing is, I'm sure he'll acquire a taste for it overnight and piggyback me into the poorhouse.
    5. As always, to be a kinder, gentler "frazier".

1- get my 1957 topps set down to 6 cards- Hank aaron, brooks robinson, frank robinson, bill mazeroski, dodgers sluggers, yankee power hitters. Also id love to upgrade any 5's in my set to at least 6's....though its not a necessity since my psa 5's in the set could have easily been 6's or id have replaced them already.

2- get my raw 56 and 57 cards graded and a those in GAI/SGC crossed over to psa for the registry.

    3- HERITAGE- yeeeeeeeeehaw!!!

    wooohoooo- im done

Nice post, I find this one quite interesting each year.

My goals this year are much different than in the past as I've taken a bit of a turn over the last few months. I hope to:

    1. Complete my 1974 Topps puzzle set
    2. Complete 1972 Topps poster set
    3. Complete 1973 Topps candy lid set
    4. Buy as many 60's-80's Topps test and oddball sets as I can afford
    5. Add a few more tough Reggie Jackson test issues
    6. Start a 1977 Topps Mexican football set

If I find a dealer with a good sleection I will let you know.

Not really a goal. But I am not going to BUY any unopened boxes of cards. It is much cheaper to buy the singles you want and or the set as a whole. SO far I passed up a few retail boxes. 3 days in a no SHAKkkkesssssss
