Do you have a link or image of said coin?

    linkified

I just think the front is too dark to even tell if its PL, let alone DPL

  • It would appear to be nearly impossible to tell on a coin like that, but without holding it in hand....I would have to agree with your assessment.

I voted no on DMPL......but it could be a crappy picture.
  • I would be in the camp of a crappy scanner.

I know mine is crappy, especially so with Proof, PL & DMPL coins.

With the seller giving a 100% money back, with shipping both ways, It might be a risk taken to see it in hand.

if you like these coins ...

  • While it is tough to say from the picture of the Obverse the Reverse sold me. Not having the coin in hand to make a more certain judgement I'd go with the DPL from the grading co.

i also thought both surfaces need to be DPL to make the grade? I can understand its a bad pic, but how can the graders for sure say the surfaces are DPL through that much toning?

You really can't tell from the Ebay photo. The reverse shows some P-L. The obverse probably has mirrors from certain angles, but one can't say that from the evidence. It looks "dead" in the photo.

In defense of the seller, it's hard to show P-L or Proof surfaces in a photo, especially a photo of a toned coin. I had an 1864 PCGS PR-64 half dollar for sale a few months ago. The had great mirrors, but I couldn't show it well on the Internet. I sold it at a show. Ditto for an 1873 P-L half dollar I had in NGC MS-64. Photos can't do these coins justice.

Immpossible to tell from a scan. End of story.
I love toned dmpl's, they can be incredible. Graders will not give the dmpl or dpl grade unless they can still see the mirrors through the toning. Remember, this piece is in an ngc slab, and they are not as tough as pcgs.
The coin is also in an old holder without the rubber strip between the paper insert and the coin, it is very possible that the coin has continued to tone over the last ten years and is now much darker than when originally graded. JMHO.image
