This seller should be kicked off of Ebay.

The item is a silver round in a deceptive box that resembles a GSA holder.

BUT his argument is, "They bid it up. What can I do about that?"

For starters you could call it a "silver round" and not imply that it is some sort of branch mint proof that came from an "estate."

Of course then it would only bring $10 or so, which would take all of the "fun" out of it. image

I don't understand why eBay hasn't nuked this one. Dozens of fraud complaints have been filed.

Well, according to some recent threads here could we actually call this fraud? image

The mind boggling part applies to the bidders too. They gotta "Wake up and smell the bacon burnin" one of these days.
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • Why are the morons bidding on it???

Even more mind boggling that people don't check feedback before bidding.

  • Why do the honest people have to put up with a seller like this. Especially the unsuspecting honest people. What I hate is if someone buys this thinking they have a real gem in value only to find out somewhere down the road when they need the money they have a $10-$20 round.

But... but... can you prove it's fraudulent? image

  • << <i>But... but... can you prove it's fraudulent? image >>

Yes, you can. If it's not legal tender in any country of the world, it is not a coin. A coin MUST be legal tender in order to be called a coin. Otherwise, it's just a 'round'. If this coin was legal tender, then it would be a counterfit and technically illegal. So there is a lot of basis for getting this auction nuked and the seller in trouble.

But, Jdurg, maybe he's using the term coin like people use penny when they mean a cent. Surely this is just a case of caveat emptor. At least that's what I keep reading here.

LOL - a number of buyers who left positive feedback have 20-30 transactions - all with this seller.

stuff that makes you go hmmmmmmm?????

Well, I found this interesting article which seems to state that the word 'coin' can only be designated in certain circumstances according to the US FTC.

  • The Savannah Scammer has been around for quite a while and knows how to skirt eBay's rules quite well. I believe once in the past, someone referred the law authorities after her which made her straighten up for a bit. Her favorite quote is it looks all good to me.

It isn't a silver round. It is a silver plated base metal copy.

Not correct. Or did US half cents not become coins until 1965? Were Trade dollars coins in 1873 - 76, not coins from 1876 to 1965, and are now coins again?

    "shill or a second ID?"

Interesting thing is that feedback score is only 19 with over 400 feedbacks total. Ebay does have the system in place to help potential buyers identify blatant shilling activity but one must be willing and able to take the time to "read between the lines."

Notice that all the "coins" offered are essentially unknown. Nothing in any of the descriptions or titles specifically identifies the coin item that is for sale. Also, if someone legitimately buys a coin, its item # becomes unknown in feedback.
