300th Post ... YN Writers Enter for Giveaway

First of all I want to say thank you to everyone on these boards you have allowed me to hang around for the last 7 or 8 months since I finally found this place. It has been both interesting and informative. I think there are some great people here, and some truly great collectors and collections as well. I read a lot more than I post, and so I thank all of you who do post more than I ... it's an interesting glimpse into our great hobby, and into human nature in general.

Okay, a contest. image

I love stories, and when I sit down to do it, I love to write. I love to read too. Winter break is here, and the kids are out of school. A little extra time on their hands. Mine too, so I won't be here much (mine can't enter this contest though; they're going to help me judge).

However, if you are a YN, or you have numismatically-inspired kids, grand-kids, nieces or nephews would like to write me a short story answering my question (please post here with a first name {only} and age, or send me these via PM and let me know if I can post them), they will entered into the contest.

My question ... image

What has been the greatest experience you've had in coin collecting so far, and why do you say that?

Top prizes will be given for YN's under 8; age 8 to 13; and age 14 to 17 years old.

Each Top Prize winner will receive a Choice Unc Lincoln Cent (pre-1950), Jefferson Nickel (pre-1950) and Roosevelt Dime (Silver) for their collection. Let's hope that I also have enough to send every entry a prize (I know I have enough to make more than a few nice little packages).

Deadline for the contest is Midnight PST January 1st (Saturday) so get those words flowing.

Winners will be posted on Sunday January 2nd by 9pm PST.

Have a great rest of the Holiday Season and a safe and Happy New Year!! image

Well ... I tried. Maybe all the YN's were gone over the Holidays. I did recieve one PM from two YN's (brothers) and although I'm not sure they answered the question and I was asked not to post part of the PM, I will be in contact with them this evening.

As for all the TTT's from ddbird, Thanks Dan! image

For Dan's effort and his following contribution while I was gone, I will increase my donation to the ANA's YN fund this year.

Dan sent this to me and I remember reading it here before, so in lieu of any other stories to post, I'll show it here.

Congrats on your 300th. Feel free to post this. This has been posted before by me but its such an amazing TRUE story, that it should be posted again.

The greatest experiece for me in collecting has been my local coin shop. Its a small local shop run by two older dealers, Dean and Dave. Even though they are catorgorized as "dealers", these two men are the most honest caring people I have ever met. They always cut me a break, and have never tried to pull a "fast one" on me. As for my best experience in the shop, here it goes....

A couple years ago, I was chllin in the local shop just passing some time. As I was drooling over the case of heavily toned morgans, a small child entered along side her mother. Her mother looked extremly stressed, as if nothing had gone her way. The child, although obviously just as stressed, still caried the innocent look of a youngin' with a smile on her face. The mother walked up to the counter and placed a coin on the glass. As Dave picked up the coin, the women said, "I have run out of gas, and despertly need money. This is the only thing I have with me. It was my Grandfathers coin that I always carry with me. Please give me a fare price." I could see as Dave flipped the coin back and forth, that it was merly a circulated common date morgan. I was too shocked to get up and move, but feared the look on the woman's face when Dave informed her of its little value. As I sit there, I saw a gleam in Dave's eyes as he walked over to the cash register. He opened the machine, pulled out a wad of twenties, and handed it to the woman. As the woman looked in awe at the stack of money, Dave simply replied, "Is five hundred enough?" The woman slowly nodded her head, acting as if she were in shock. The woman then thanked the dealer and started walking towards the door. After the woman left, Dave noticed the young girl was still in his shop. He called her over to him, and handed the young girl back her mother's coin as he said, "Keep this forever, its a special one." The girl then put the coin in her pocket, and followed her mother out the door. As I sat there and pondered what had just happened, Dave approached me. Me being the young dumb kid I was, I asked why he had given them so much money for the common date morgan. He looked at me and said, "Sometimes you just have to do something nice."

This was, and always will be, my best experience I have had in collecting coins so far. The above story was true, and over the years, as the story has spread across town, business has actually picked up for the two local dealers. I now go into this local shop frequently, not only to learn of the tricks to collecting, but also learn a few helpful lessons about life.

    Happy Holidays

    ~Dan~
