Is this PCI 1937-D 3 Leg Real? (Link Removed, Picture Added)

I saw this nice Buffalo 1937-D PCI AU53 cleaned and the more I looked at the picture the more it just didn't look like other ones I have seen. I dont's see the flat spot on the front of the head, none of the hoof shows, and the raised spotted line from the stomach down doesn't show up very well. Any comments on whether the coin is the real thing?

Thanks,
Charlie

I am not an expert on these coins so I have no comment on the authenticity of this coin but I have noticed an unusual amount of these coins in the third tier slabs lately- kind of strange? mike

Here's one I found with google.

Notice the hoof is still there, and the leg is missing. The coin you questioned does'nt look entirely like this one.
    • Why don't you take this to the people selling the coin? They are members here and very good to buy from and work with!

I would have asked them about the coin, but thought they would be closed for Christmas.

      Could be the lighting though.

I think it's real, you can see the hoof where the leg is missing, it's just very weak. The reason I think it's real is the weak right rear leg which looks beaten-up. Here's another for comparison:

One of the diagnosis is the pitting on the back leg which looks correct in the photo. The coin does look like it was polished or cleaned long ago. It looks too shiney.

Although the Indian's neck is ratty in the right place (back of neck high up near hair) I don't like the ...image... of the reverse.
It could just be the image. But usually there is a raised line under the buffalo (looks like he's peeing) and I haven't seen one with the rear leg so weak nor the hoof looking "removed" as it does in the image.

Hard to tell from that image, but I don't like what I don't see.

Those dots from the ..uh...belly have been present on all I've seen.

    • Looks good to me. The hoof is there, the back leg is very ratty, E Pluribus Unum is distant from the bison's back. The dots going up to the belly don't show clearly but I think that is the lighting.
    • It's real. image

There is no question in my mind that the coin shown is real.

Real with a touch of heat to get that splotchy bluish-auburn color in the fields. Someone just tried to cover up the cleaning at one time I would think.

Exactly.....This is caused by the fact that the buffalo on the genuine three leg is actually a little smaller than that on the norm.
I think he was the runt of the litter !!

Here's an example of one that doesn't look quite kosher....Note the motto almost touching the buffalo's back.

The coin is a real 3 legged Buffalo, but the color looks bogus.

Runaway!!!!!!! That looks bad to me. From the initial view, it doesn't have the metal dots under the buffalo that should be there. The lack of a hoof and just overall look of a "new die" make me think someones pulling a fast one.

Yes, it is real. The toning is not. It loks to have been pollished at some time and maybe that is what is confusing you.

The last link at the bottom of page 1 to a "bad" 3-leged bufalo is real too (but damaged).

Go read up about the coin before posting.

    • Yup- it's real. The old cleaning and AT may have obscured some of the finer details such as the dots from the belly, but all of the other diagnostics are there. Look on the obverse as well - the feather is slightly detached from the indian's neck- another good sign that the coin is legit. The beard on the buff looks right and EPU is nice and seperated. Not 100% original, but 100% authentic.
