2004 Clad Proof Sets

What are the thoughts here on the 2004 Clad Proof sets and how fast they are going up in price, now that mint has sold out. How high will this go?

Yawn. They will go up very quickly due to demand and then fall and level off at abuot 75% of original sales price in three years...........or not.

I see no reason for a increase in price when you can still purchase Silver Proof sets which I consider a better product.

My local dealer bought 10 sets at $46.00. As of today they were gone out the door at $55.00 each. Ask is $53. I think they will continue to rise.

The "yawn" comment reminds of a very educated coin guy that I know. He asked me what I have been buying lately, I told him toned coins and he said right to my face "yawn"! That very day I sold a nice one for $270.00

  • I know this sounds crazy, but I'm wiling to bet that the 2004 will rise like the 99 set did..........lets see what they are going for in 6 months.....i bet over $100. Coin World says lowest proof mintage since 1960

    GAT,
Does that mean a MS67FBL Franklin is not as good as a PR68?

tsacch- Why respond to someones honest inquiry if it makes you "Yawn?" It takes the fun out of the thread for everyone interested that reads it. Mostly a big downer for the author.

The 2004 proof sets have a lot going for them. Dealers and collectors were caught with their pants down when the mint suddenly stopped selling them. That means that most of the speculators that would have bought large groups at the end of the year didn't get the chance. That means that not only is the mintage less then the other proof sets but the distribution of sets is spread out and that might be even more important. For example 1995 and 1996 proof sets have about the same mintage of about 2 million sets. 1995's go for $75 while 1996's go for $15. The difference is when the 1995's were hot speculators bought large lots of the 1996's thinking they would go up so there are a lot of the 1996 sets sitting around. I think once the 2004 proof sets that are on the market have been absorbed by collectors we will see them continue to go up. I don't think $100 a set is unrealistic.

Like someone said why buy the clad set for $55 from a dealer when you can get a silver set for $37.95 from the mint? There are a lot of people who buy proof sets for gifts who are doing that. Another factor keeping them down is that if a person buys sets for the state quarters they can just get the 5 piece proof quarter set for $15.95. When the mint stops selling these two products it will add pressure to the 2004 11 piece clad sets and that will make them go up even more.

    Good question TW.
These 2004 clad PS really caught me off guard with this price jump. I did not notice the price increase until a few days ago.
  • This is the first year in a while that I bought any US Mint products. I bought
three of these and wish I had bought 30!

Sold out too early and in perfect ignorance.

I think that the 2004 set is overrated, and irritates me that the mint stopped selling them during the holiday season when many people might have wanted them.

The silver sets are a FAR better product IMO, and yet no some years are selling for less than their issue price. I think the reason is that the Home Shipping Networks have driven up the bids. They see more profit potential in the clad sets and therefore push them

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The mint fooled everybody this year. Silver Quarters out early. Clad proofs running out. Silver proofs still available. And all kinds of pouched nickles. And overall improved quality of coins in the mint sets. More PCGS MS68's on the market this year than ever before. IMHO almost all mint products are going hold a higher value than last years.
