WTB: Morgans by the roll- CH GEM BU- realistic

I want to have some fun putting together at least 80 coins total to send into 1 service to grade out at a straight ms64 or possibly 65, not proofs or dmpl's strictly GEM coinage. I am willing to pay a REASONABLE price. The coins will most likely be sold 15-20 years down the road. If there are any dealers willing to work with me and NOT against - i am all ears and an open check book.

  • Rolls of MS-65 @ a reasonable price? Most dealers will submit them themselves and sell them individually and make more money that way. Good luck.

What is considered a reasonable price to you? Take, for example, a roll of 1881-S Morgans (not PL and no DMPL, just strict MS65 coins). Do you consider a reasonable price to be redbook value? Trends value? Greysheet bid value or ask value? 10% above or below bid or ask? 20% above or below bid or ask? Somewhere in the middle of bid and ask? I am just curious, so don't get offended.

Good luck on your search. When you do get some Morgans to look at, be sure to search for rare VAMs. image
  • Cameron- thanks for the advice- maybe I'm pipe dreaming, but I have to give it a shot.

Rampage- At present I don't have a grey sheet to see what the bid/ask price is on the 81-s, I do know that current redbook shows this @$115.00, the December issue of coinValues shows this at $175.00, and the January issue of Coins has it at $165.00. If I were to take Redbook pricing which I feel may be low for many reasons, I would probably add 15% on top of this price or $138.00 a coin- but that would more or less be like a guaranty that all 20 will definitely grade at 65. I would also take into consideration that if there is no set promise on all being a 65, then I would go at it with redbook price plus 7 or 8 per coin. Is this logical/reasonable?

what I would hope to get would be a mixed roll of commons and maybe 1-4 semi key dates/mints at about $650.00 a roll- but I don't know for sure if this to low or I'll be an open house to the dealer- obviously when the new year comes around - I get to play with my money and get a years sub to the grey and blue sheet, so I will have a better handle on pricing. Or play ebay and go after the ms65 in either pcgs, anacs, ngc holders. - I wanted to have some fun and not get burned in the process.

I'm not offended, your point is well taken and definitely sound advice. I'll always be looking for rarities in the way of Vam- just bought the VAM book- have yet to start reading- wife says no drinking and reading- I fall asleep to easily.

Again thanks - and I do hope there is a dealer out there that might point me in the right direction on my venture.

I would think that something around $1000 mite be more realistic for a roll of 81-s 4 in 65 16 in 64 give or take a little. I wouldn't expect a roll to be unsearched.

It is reasonable. Greysheet bid in MS-65 is $132.

You might as well buy 20 slabbed ones for around $135-140 each saving you money. You will be shooting yourself in the foot if you pay $138 a coin and then another $20 each for grading.

Buy them graded unless you luck into an original roll and what to take a shot.
