Today's Barber Quarter NEWP

I decided to fill a tough hole in my Barber Quarter set with this 1913-S. One and a half letters show and strictly original. Feels pretty cool to buy the lowest mintage Quarter of the 20th Century. About one minute after I post this it will be freed from it's plastic and put in an album with many of it's other brethren. Wish I had bought one a few years ago instead, but what are you gonna' do?

    I like it.

Looks like one little nick on the jaw line, but other than that, very nice.

There are a lot of fugly G6 examples out there - this isn't one of them. MONEY IN THE BANK, TOO.

    Congrats!

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • Thanks Jon, I couldn't let you have all the fun.

There is a mark on the jaw, ain't no thing. The coin has gotten around in it's time.

Yep - that'll look just right in an album environment. image

How the hell do you crack them that way without damaging the coin?

    Use a band saw.

    Unless that's a Photoshop pic.

    Ok, I'm an idiot.
  • Tin Snips. Clip right on the edge and the slab will crack all the way across.

Personally, I really like squeezing the slab slowly in a vice, both on top-bottom and then the sides, 'til it cracks along the seams - opens up like a book cover, no cracked plastic near the coin. But, it's all good, whatever works.

A little snip at the edge and PCGS or ANACS slabs crack all the way across. The new, pliable NGC holders are a real bear though. I have yet to find the secret for getting those open easily.

Jon, I've had luck with the vise method on current NGC slabs. Perhaps that will work?

That's a nice coin Jon, and I know where you bought it from. As for liberating coins from the new NGC holders, I use a hacksaw. One image shows the hacksaw with the top of the NGC slab on the floor while the other shows the coin, which is now in my Library of Coins album with its brethren. The plastic on the new NGC slab is so pliable that it cuts very easily, but will leave small, white burs all over if you are not careful.

VERY nice. As much as I usually collect higher-grade coins, I LOVE the look of problem-free, original coins with lots of even, honest wear and eye-appealing surfaces. image

    Nice coin!

TomB - do you like my method of cracking NGC slabs?

Hmm, sounds like there's a good story there. Enquiring minds want to know!

I think your method, EVP, is much better to perform in a carpeted hotel room than in, say, someone's appartment.image
