  • Wow. For the buyer's sake, hope it's not a mis-labeled SMS coin. image

  • Even if it was a mislabeled SMS coin, it still shouldn't have fetched $500!! I was hopin to pick this one up for about $20

    update:

PCGS verification shows this coin is plainly MS66

Nice obverse. It doesn't look SMS if for no other reason that SMS coins rarely have such a worn die as the reverse.

Actually, that's slightly a high price for that coin in that grade... but not totally out of the orbit. Recently 4 more 66's showed up in the pop reports... which means a total of 9 coins in 66 with 2 in 67 exist... and with most of the high grade coins locked up in Registry Sets and 0 graded Full Steps... other coins have sold this year for the following prices in this grade and date (hold onto your shorts): $307.52, $280, $690... I'm being very optimistic when I say this... but when PCGS starts grading 1967 mint state coins in Full steps (if they do exist)... these prices will fall.

Also, I've sung this same song for a while now... if you think the PCGS Price Guide is anywhere near close for Jeffersons... you are sadly mistaken.

Whoa, 66 or not, I want a much sharper strike for that kind of money ... definitely not a mislabeled SMS.

Because some people have more money than brains? TT even says that it's an "average" strike. I think I'd go as high as twenty dollars for that one, but no higher.

overgraded and weakly struck POS.............even though the reverse shows signs of a worn die, the step area of the die isn't worn-----GEEZ, it was hardly ever used during these years. the areas that were used are showing signs of wear, such as the fields and the dome. all the same there is no step detail and instead a classic "wheel-chair ramp" effect and remnants of planchet flaws---indicative of a weak strike--- which shouldn't be mistaken as post-strike contacts. even the obverse which looks to have been struck by a much newer die shows signs of weakness at the hair near the ear and the jawline.

i go with point buying as cloud9 suggested!!image

  • When I sold my #7 (at the time) Modern Jeff set off early this year (sorry Steve.....had I not had to sell, I wouldnt have, though you have made tremendous progress on your set lately), I got the EXACT same for my '67 MS66 (no, its not the same one from Teletrade, and mine was accurately graded....a tiny bit soft, but a real decent strike)...that was late Jan, early Feb...and at that time, it was a pop 4/2, and that hadnt changed for quite some time...so, in the last 11 months, give or take a week or two, 5 more have been made at the 66 level...if you want to use the sale of mine as a marker, please do...then you can tell ME why it sold for that much. Understandably, its still a TOUGH one to get in that grade, but wouldn't one think, given the pop increase.....?????

Also, I KNOW for a FACT that the buyer of mine immediately put it up on Heritage, where it realize $560, including the juice.

As an aside, if any of you Jeff guys needs an '02-P 67FS.............

Well... Thanks MassFullStepper for your kind thoughts...

Again, all I'm saying is these coins have been bringing some decent money... almost has me thinking of liquidating... did I say that out loud?

A few years ago... before the design change and the influx of people buying these coins, I bought my 67 in 66 off of teletrade for $100 and thought that was high. You can find my coin here. The scratch on the cheek is actually on the slab. Some won't like it... but, it's mine. With prices like the one in the other post, I think I might have made a few dollars on it... but I digress.

Some of the dates in this series have steadily gone up this year. So much so, that I made a price guide of auction prices realized for this series because I haven't found one that actually is acurate.

I look forward to watching, and maybe bidding on some of your coins... send them in. Or, you can just tell me which dates you have that upgrade my Registry Set and we can talk price.

On a side note... a few years ago... there were less than 10 Late Date Jefferson Registry Sets... today, there are 50. The coin sold for $500 on Teletrade recently was due to this...

Wow... I also just noticed that for the time being... I'm now #4 (again) all time... Ray... you'd better get back up there quick...

  • I actually got mine off ebay for $137.52.....but again, before the desing change, and obviously, before Jeffs became hot...still wish I didnt have to sell them off

    Keets and Cloud9,

I'm sure someone is buying points... or at least a coin they think PCGS has graded 66 and is worthy of that grade. But, it wouldn't have sold for that, if someone wasn't willing to pay that amount.

But, the PCGS price guide says it's a $10 coin... image

Here are some prices you might not have seen in the news... all are PCGS graded coins unless noted:

    1939P MS66FS Ty 1... $1200
1939 MS66 FS22... seven have sold this year... average price... $1361.59
    1939D MS66FS Ty 1... $1350 plus others with an average of $1037.50
    1939D MS66FS Ty 2... $2350 plus others with an average of $1713.50
awe screw it... this could take all day... lets go to the late date stuff...
1965 MS66... one sold for $150... which is absolutely nuts... when they sell for $40
1966 MS66 one sold for $120... with most selling for $50's
    1968D ANACS MS65 5FS... $1350
    1968S MS67... uhm... I won't name names... $522.25
    1968S MS66FS... $4140
1969D MS66... $449 with others sold for much less
    1969S MS66... ballpark $200
    1970S MS65FS... a number have sold... average $664.05
    1971P MS67FS... $643.65
    1974-P MS66FS... $920
    1974-D MS67FS... $718.75
    1975-D MS66FS... $320
    1976-D MS67FS... $2012.50

Should I keep going or have I made my point yet? FYI... some of these coins are current pop #1's... did their owners buy them for points or rarity?

Also, I'm in the final stages of completing my price guide for this series... at present, it contains over 12,000 auction prices and closing in on 1.5 million in total sales, 220 pages long, and over 400 hours worth of work... my labor of love. Anyone wanting to receive this guide when it is done can send me a pm to protect your image... I won't tell anyone.

From what I keep hearing from the huddled masses in this forum is that these coins certainly aren't rare... so I put it to you all... find me a coin from the following and I'll offer the same offer I wrote in another rant here recently... that rant is listed here... my answer is at the bottom.

    Enough of my rant...
