Warpaint Roosie - Photo Xperiment

MrSpudMrSpud Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭
Attached are a couple of pictures of one of MrsSpud's toned Roosevelt dime. It is a bizzarre colored dime with Roosevelt looking like he has warpaint on. I have been playing around with the camera and have been trying to capture the toning on this coin. Let me know what you think, both of the coin and of my photography. Is this kind of toning desirable? What photography techniques would bring out the colors better? Thanks.

image Nice pictures, and tone. The photo on the left is better. I'd be interested if you had one like this for 1957image Lee

I don't know for sure if the coin is AT or NT, but I tend to think it is album toned. MrsSpud bought an old beat up Whitman folder of XF to BU Roosevelts a while back and most of them had at least some toning. Some of the toned coins in the album looked attractive to me, some looked not so attractive. This coin was the most unusual looking one in the album. I'll have to go look and see what the 57 looked like.

By the way, I think I may be getting a little better at taking pictures. My pics used to be much blurrier and out of focus before. I took these pics with my camera mounted into a ring stand where the camera can be moved up and down in order to focus it better and to hold it steady while I take the pics. It actually is a stand to hold a small doll that I picked up in the craft section of Wal-Mart for something like $2.00. The ring is meant to go around the dolls waist under a dress and just happens to be the perfect size to fit around the lens of my camera.

I just checked. The 57 has some toning around the perimeter, especially in the upper right of the obverse but Roosevelts head has what appears to be grey etching (perhaps from an old fingerprint). The colors aren't nearly as intense as the 61 in the pics above. Of the coins around the 57, the 54, 54D, 54S, 55, 56, 58, 58D, 59, 60 and 60D have the most intense colors. Not all of them are MS though. They look really great in an album though. MrsSpud is starting to work on 2 albums. One is a mainly white BU in a Dansco and the other is a AU-BU toned set in a Used Whitman Album (not the old folder) she picked up. She also is starting to work on a PCGS/NGC Registry set of 46-64 Roosevelts over at NGC. She is into dimes.
