Everybody else seems to think it's cleaned... wish I knew what they were seeing, because it looks OK to me. As for grade, I'd call it a tossup between AU50 and AU53.
    When in doubt, don't.

What I am seeing is a minimally worn coin that should show considerable original luster if it wern't messed with. Since it is as flat and as dull as can be, it clearly has been 'messed with' and it is either been cleaned (as already suggested), or IMO more likely, was subjected to over dipping and then not neutralized properly. The ugly toning IMO is due to the incomplete (or total lack of) rinsing/neutralizing after the way overdone dip. I've seen that ugly brown toning develop frequently on improperly processed dipped coins...some even in slabs.

It's possible it was cleaned harshly a long time ago, but again, IMO, the pattern of toning is consistent with what I have seen when harshly dipped coins are allowed to 'air dry' without neutralizing. Again, IMO since the toning is darker more prevalent on the obverse, it would be my guess, that the dipped coin was allowed to air dry with the obverse facing up, thereby allowing the unremoved dip solution to eat further into the coins surface on the obverse. Dats what I see.

I think it was cleaned too, but I am willing to concede that it could be the picture
