I would without question film anyone committing a crime and report it immediately. Any other alternative, no matter the circumstances, is wrong.
nwcs - Why? Surely the world would be a better place if you took the coins. Things only get dangerous if you assume that condoning this theft opens the doors to other thieves in other scenarios. But nobody in this thread has suggested that we change any laws.

That exact thing just happened at a show this weekend - the cameraman dropped the camera and all that could be heard was the glass from cases being broken
Film the thiefs, take as many coins as I can and return to the rightful owners after the dust settles. Insurance company doesn't know that they weren't stolen. Actually, they were, just temporarily.
